“Landowners Are Not Protected”
Submitted By Brenda Parker

A local landowner is being sued by a person whom he has neither met nor spoken to. A person, who without the knowledge or permission of the landowner, chose to hunt on the landowner’s property where he discovered a tree stand, which the property owner had no knowledge of.  The hunter climbed into the tree stand, which he claims he fell out of further claiming he sustained an injury caused from the fall.  He is now suing the landowner claiming it was the fault of the landowner for a choice he himself made.

The landowner is now forced to post his property barring anyone who has not been given permission to be there. Landowners are at risk of being sued by an unscrupulous person, like this hunter, who refuses to take responsibility for his own poor decision.

It seems lawsuits are becoming a national pastime urged on by greedy, unscrupulous lawyers who along with their clients are sue happy.  Together they seek out a person with assets and/or a good insurance policy.

Lawyers, who without basis or concrete proof of their clients allegations, forge the path of deception.  Lawyers, who seek to “get compensation” for the supposed victim of an injury which they “claim” was caused through no fault of their own, but due to the negligence of someone else.  This greedy, deceitful hunter and his lawyer seek to gain something for nothing, through their frivolous and unwarranted lawsuit.

These lawyers are only concerned with getting money for their client and themselves, and could care less about the defendant’s innocence.

Why do Judges allow this?  Have they lost sight of the concept of Justice?  Don’t they have an obligation to protect the decent citizens of this country against those who are only seeking financial gain?

To Whom It May Concern:
My family comes up to Chichester every first week in August from Rhode Island just to enjoy the Balloon Festival and the truly amazing Fireworks display that follows.  I have 4 daughters who already enjoy them and this year my granddaughter was going to experience the wonderful display that I brag about to everyone I know.

We have a summer house in Chichester and with all the other activities and sites we visit, the Fireworks Display beats out everything for the whole week!! My girls even invite their friends up just to see them.  I still haven’t told them that their vacation might be ruined because of someone’s opinion or a group’s opinion. I really hope that the tradition of the best Fireworks I’ve every seen can be saved considering how many other people also look forward to the incredible display that Pittsfield should be proud of.

Please Continue Fireworks As Annually Expected!!

Sincerely,
Karen Gardiner and Family

Letter To The Editor

Hi, my name is Ben and I am currently working on my communications merit badge.  One of the requirements is to send a letter to the editor of a newspaper, telling my opinion of a story.  I picked an article in Vol. LVI-No. 32, Wednesday, August 18, 2010.  The name of the article was Pittsfield Balloon Race.  It was a nice overall article, but there were a few things, like it was a very short article and didn’t go into a lot of detail.  Details like what the terrain was like, or what else was happening when people weren’t racing.

I did like how you recognized a lot of people, not just 1st Place.  The amount of pictures were good and I like the extra links at the end.

Thanks for reading.

TOPS News
Submitted By Terrie Azotea

Well I hope that everyone is enjoying these hot summer days.  Time to drink lots of water; as it is very good for the body. They say we should have 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water a day.  Wow, that seems like a lot and it is.  But if you put it in a glass with some ice, and just sip it throughout the day you have done it.  Try it!  It might be refreshing. Add some green tea and you have a nice summer drink.

The gardens are starting to look good and I am even picking lettuce - that is a good feeling. Farmer’s Markets are starting to open and it’s a good time to enjoy a fresh summer salad or a juicy piece of fruit. Strawberry season is here and they are full of antioxidants, so enjoy.

We meet at TOPS on Tuesday nights, at the St. Stephen’s Church on Main Street. Weigh in is at 5:30 and the meeting is at 6:30. We have lots of laughs and a good time with our members.  If you would like to join us, we will always welcome new faces and make a friend along the way.

Please call Laurel Tiede at 269-8721 or Pat Smith at 435-5333 and these ladies would be happy to answer any questions you  might have.  Hope you all have a wonderful week and remember to drink lots of water in the summer heat.

We are also one of many Pittsfield households who invite a houseful of guests on the weekend of the Balloon Festival.  People come up on Friday and stay until Sunday.  They spend money in town and at Drake Field throughout the weekend.  Make no mistake, though, there is one, and only one reason for their annual migration to Pittsfield.

Sure, they enjoy their weekend on our farm, and they readily spend money on rides, food, and trinkets for their kids.  But the reality is that our guests drive anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to see the best fireworks north of the Boston Esplanade on July 4th.  Without those fireworks, I am off the hook hosting a houseful of people on the first weekend of every August.

Personally I am both angry and saddened that those who made the decision to cancel the fireworks, chose to sacrifice the many over the few (or the one).  This decision will have a profoundly negative effect on the future financial success of the Pittsfield Rotary Club’s Annual Balloon Festival and the Town of Pittsfield.  The attendance numbers will prove it.

God Bless Our Troops,
Rachel Wood

St. Stephen’s Church is hosting Dave at 11:00 am in front of PYW where he will be shooting free throws and collecting donations.  For more information you can visit www.hoopsforheroes.com.  Don’t forget to stop in at St. Stephen’s Church for their Silent Auction, Raffle and Food items.

The Parade will start at 1pm and follow the same route as years past.  Has your group or organization put together a float?  It’s not too late – call Louie Houle at 435-6938 to register.  Participants are asked to submit a short write up about their entry and give it to the parade organizers.

The festivities continue after the parade at 3 pm with the Grand Opening And Dedication Of The Pittsfield Youth Athletic Park on Tilton Hill Road.  Many people, businesses and organizations have donated goods, services and money to this wonderful project – just another kind of super hero!  Bob “Steamer” Stanley of the Red Sox will be the guest speaker and Ms. Tori Volpe will sing the National Anthem.  A short baseball game will follow between the current PMHS team and PMHS Alumni.

Then we move to Drake Field – bring your blanket and chairs and settle in for some good music.  At 5:30 pm at the Gazebo near the tennis courts join us as we “Dance Down Memory Lane” with Harmonica Maestro, Bill Parker and his one man orchestra.  He plays all kinds of music that you will enjoy.

At 6 pm Super “Hero” Subs, chips and a drink will be available on a first come, first served basis.  A donation (monetary or a non-perishable food item) to benefit the Pittsfield Food Pantry is requested.

More music from 7:30-9 pm by the Windham Town Band.  The band’s repertoire is composed of music that is “recognizable and crowd pleasing.”  We are sure you’ll enjoy their music too!  The day’s events will end with a Spectacular Fireworks display at Dusk.

If you’d like to volunteer at Old Home Day (setting up, cleaning up, helping for a few hours) – please call Andi Riel at 435-6346 or Louie Houle at 435-6938.

Letter to the Editor

This is my 2nd letter to the editor. I was so mad at finding out there would be no fireworks this year at the Balloon Rally, I wrote too long of a letter to be printed in the Sun newspaper; all of it saying what good the Balloon Rally is for the town and the community.

Rather than ramble on and on and re-write what already has been printed in the newspaper, I will simply say I stand by the Pittsfield Rotary Club 110%. This civic organization is the Best of the Best. They have the know how and “can do” to get things done. I consider this a bump in the road for them. It is a shame a few have spoiled it for thousands of others during this wonderful time.

A Reader’s Favorite Things
Submitted By Donna Keeley

From time to time, I have seen “favorite things” printed by others.  It seems to put things into perspective in times of strife or turmoil.  Here are mine.

• The flowers all throughout town; and seeing them being cared for
• Our cute little library
• Running into “folks” at Jitters
• Watching the wonderful transformation of the ball fields
• The “Mayor”
• Town Wide Yard Sale Day
• Old Home Day
• Rotary Balloon Rally
• The town “pool”
• Pittsfield Youth Workshop
• The passion and kindness of our town’s people
• Our Main Street
• The Pittsfield Voice, Suncook Valley Sun

Okay, so two old ladies have been able to tie the town up in knots over the fireworks in the cemetery during the Balloon Festival. Instead of running around like a dog with its tail between its legs, what are we as a community willing to do about it? It will affect and impact the charitable incomes, business incomes, livelihoods and social calendars of people we know and don’t know. Let’s hear some suggestions.

I have a couple  to get started:

1. Start a petition and get as many signatures as possible, so when it does go to court, the lawyers can show they have the support of the town’s people behind them.

2. Find the owners of the plots in the cemetery, if possible, ask them to make their opinion known to the Cemetery Committee. Ask them to make the committee aware they do not want, intend nor condone the actions of the committee and do not want to be part of nor pay any part of any possible potential legal actions.

We as a community needed a shaking up, so now let’s do a little shaking of our own! Now is not the time to lie down and let our town get run over.

Pamela Taylor

I write to thank the donors to the Pittsfield Flower Fund for their generosity.  The fund pays for the hanging baskets throughout our downtown and don’t they look good!

As I wrote last year, Pittsfield should do a little bragging about the level of volunteerism in our town.  We have the new baseball complex, the blaze of flowers at the Town Hall entrance (not done by the flower fund) and numerous garden areas through downtown.  I dare to think that the pride generated by these various projects is catching and will lead others to come up with their own way to show their pride in our treasured community.

Sincerely,
John Lenaerts

Letter To The Editor

To the good citizens of Pittsfield:

I spent most of the last two days on an island in Pittsfield.

The beautification committee had asked for my assistance to build a small stonewall around their beautiful plantings on the traffic island at the beginning of Tilton Hill Road.

Paul Richardson built the wall facing the old Twin M site.  He did such a good job, I told him anything happens to me, he could continue the stonework around town.  He didn’t look too excited.

Carole Richardson and Nicole Ward moved our stone from a neighbor’s house to the island and did a little building.

Many thanks to the financial support of some generous supporters who made possible the purchase  of one pallet of weathered granite and one pallet of Pennsylvania Flat from Swenson Granite in Concord.

On a related note the stonemen are offering a $10 reward for the apprehension of the vandals who, a couple of Thursdays ago ripped out flowers, stole sponsor signs, and tipped over mailboxes.  To the family or friends of these vandals, I say, turn them in then we can teach them the value of planting flowers versus ripping them out.  To the vandals, you are on our most wanted list.

Working on these projects gives me the opportunity to work and talk to quite a few citizens.

My apologies for getting loud and excited, sometimes with foul language.  I don’t have my wife to kick me in the leg when I need to shut up with me all the time.

There’s been a lot of bloodshed over the years over politics in Pittsfield.  Working together to beautify Pittsfield is helping me get over it.
