Dorcas Guild

The Dorcas Guild of the First Congregational Church in Pittsfield met on March 9th. President Nella Hobson opened the meeting and Reny Boyd read a devotion, which Shirley Bleckmann had selected, “Making of Friends”, followed by the Lord’s Prayer.

The secretary gave her report of the previous meeting, read items of correspondence and circulated nineteen cards (thinking of you, get well, and sympathy) to be signed by members for mailing.  The treasurer also gave her financial report.

Elsie Morse brought the food basket, it was taken by Corine Miller and will go next to Evelyn Richard.  Corine brought the apron, Reny took it and it will travel next to Mary Jo Powelson.  The mystery package, brought by Joan Riel, was won by Mary Lawson.
An update was given on the idea of an AED to be installed in the building (defibrillator), discussion followed.  Mary Lawson solicited needs for the Easter Breakfast. Nella mentioned the World Day of Prayer service held in Alton on March 4th.  Our church was second in number for those attending.  The guild voted $100 to World Day of Prayer, designated for Chile, which was the center of the “Day” this year.

The Easter Banners, the Guild had noted to purchase, had arrived and were shown.  Very lovely and will be used on Easter Sunday.

In answer to a request in the Sunday bulletin, seven church family members have offered their help at a time of collations.  Twenty-five dollars was voted to the Building Fund in memory of Mary Burbank LeDuc, long time Sunday School Teacher and Nursery Care provider.  Wednesday work meetings are going well, looking forward to the return of all the “snow birds.”  This months project of toiletry items brought in a great supply for the local food pantry.

Plans were made for a trip to Cathedral in the Pines for Saturday, June 25th.  A bus, with 45 person seating will leave the church at 9:30 am and arrive back at 5:30 pm.  Those going will need a picnic lunch. A tour will be held at 12:30, there will be free time for your own enjoyment.  Rev. Dave plans to hold a short service at the main altar.

Hostesses, Shirley Bleckmann and Reny Boyd served delicious refreshments of 3-layer angel cake, topped with the filling and strawberries; cheese and crackers; coffee and punch (lime soda with lime sherbet); and Andes mints in keeping with the St. Patrick’s Day green.  During the social hour, Nella read a 10 minute mystery during which time members were to come up with “Who Dunnit” and a few had it solved.

The next meeting will be held on April 12th, with Betty MacKay, Sally Lewis and Nella Hobson as hostesses.  The program will be talent night for anyone chosing to participate.

VA Launches New PSA On Suicide Prevention For Veterans
Submitted By Merrill A. Vaughan
Vice Commander American Legion Peterson-Cram Post 75
Pittsfield, NH 03263

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is reaching out to Veterans in crisis and their families in a new public service announcement to raise awareness about suicide prevention resources, such as the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

“As more Veterans return from Iraq and Afghanistan, the critical need for mental health care is rising,” said Sonja V. Batten, assistant deputy chief patient care services officer for mental health.  “VA is increasing its efforts to reach out to Veterans in need and their families, to inform them about available services and programs.”

The new television spot encourages Veterans in crisis to call the crisis hotline number at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and then push 1 on their telephone keypad to reach a trained VA mental health professional who can assist the Veteran 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Suicide is preventable,” said Batten. “Every Veteran suicide is tragic and regardless of the numbers or rates, one Veteran suicide is too many.

We feel the responsibility to continue to spread the word throughout the nation that suicide prevention is everyone’s business.”

So far, more than 379,000 people have called the hotline, and more than 200,000 of these callers have identified themselves as Veterans, family members or friends of Veterans. The hotline has led to more than 13,000 rescues of actively suicidal Veterans.
The hotline also operates an online Veterans Chat program, which provides Veterans, their families and friends with the ability to communicate anonymously online in real-time with a trained VA mental health professional.  Veterans Chat can be accessed through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s web page at:

http://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/Veterans/Default.aspx.

Through the hotline and Veterans Chat, VA can connect Veterans and their families with important services, including suicide prevention coordinators, as well as general inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services at VA medical centers and community-based outpatient clinics.

The hotline, which is part of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, was started in 2007 as a partnership between VA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Letter

To the good citizens of Pittsfield:
I would like to thank all the people who came out to vote in the Town elections.  It makes me very happy to see my fellow citizens.  I was pleased to see the peaceful and respectful attitude toward all the candidates.  We have differences but we settle them well.

I also want to thank those who voted for me.  I will work very hard for the people of our town.  The work ahead will be tough, but as your selectman, I will do my best to help solve any problems you bring to the Board. The town of Pittsfield is where I have seen, firsthand, citizens giving to make our town a great place to live.  I will be ready and proud to be one of the many town leaders to work for Pittsfield’s future.

Sincerely,
Gerard LeDuc
Pittsfield

Letter

I would like to thank all the people who came out and participated in the Town election, the District School Meeting and the Town Meeting. It is so important for the citizens to let the Town officials know how to govern. I only wished more people would understand how important it is to exercise their precious right to vote.

I would like to thank everyone who voted for me for the Planning Board. You have my promise that I will work hard to make the Planning Board better than I found it. Please let the Planning Board know what you liked and disliked about the Zoning Ordinance. I can be reached at 435-3415 or [email protected] if you would like to discuss any issue.

Finally I would like to congratulate all the candidates who ran, regardless of the outcome, for their commitment to serve the town. Please accept my sincere thanks for helping to make Pittsfield a very special place to live.

God bless our country,
