Celebrating Birthdays are: September 15, Jane Adams; September 16, Mary Zahn; September 17, June Valentyn; September 18, Pat Alexander, Joseph Suchomski; September 20, Kegan Feeny.

A Very Happy Birthday To One And All.

The Pittsfield Players full cast rehearsal for “Hello, Dolly!” will be held on Sunday, September 12 at 5 p.m. Men are still needed for song and dance parts and are asked to come.

Audrey and Beverly Moore recently enjoyed a week-long cruise on the Norwegian Spirit from Boston to Bermuda, enjoying gourmet meals, first class dinners and Bingo! They spent three days in Bermuda and went by Catamaran Ferry to St. Georges and the City of Hamilton.

An exciting part of the trip was the Captain’s expertise in dodging two hurricanes! They were blessed with Danielle on the way over and Earl on the return trip.

Did any of you read the article in the August 24th edition of the New Hampshire Union Leader entitled, “What Would Mr. Glidden Do?” A former student, Carl Cutting, told of his unstable homelife in his youth, his personal tragedies in his life after graduating from high school, and his eventual success in college and becoming a  teacher. Cutting is now a teacher in Taiwan. He took the month of August off and came back to New Hampshire to see old friends and tour the state. He brought with him six of his students and their parents. Among his friends was Jonas Glidden, with whom they visited, who was one of his teachers at PHS. Carl attributes his time under Jonas as a great part of his success and his own teaching now helps him “live his life in a positive way.” A fine example of what an impact teachers do have on a student’s life.

Congrats, Jonas and Carl.

Letter

A sincere thank you to State Representative Carol McGuire (Epsom, Pittsfield and Allenstown) for opening her home recently as an opportunity for her constituents to voice their opinions regarding state laws and regulations. Although we all enjoyed the small forum, I am a bit disappointed that more folks in our district weren’t able to take advantage of the opportunity. I would urge anyone ... of any party ... to encourage more of this type of informal, but effective, access to and involvement with our government representatives. Kudos to Carol also for her weekly postings in the Suncook Valley Sun about developments in the legislature. It is my hope that my humble bid for NH State Representative (District 8) in the upcoming election meets with the approval needed and allows me to continue to work with such like-minded folks.

Hike One of Suncook River Watershed’s Hidden Gems

Please join the Friends of the Suncook River and the Epsom Conservation Commission for a hike in the Epsom Town Forest Saturday, September 18. (Rain date the 19th). Meet at the Epsom Town Forest parking lot at 10:00 a.m. For further information, contact Eric Orff from Friends of the Suncook River at 736-4663.

Long time Commission chair, Alison Parodi will lead the easy to moderate hike into the heart of the Town Forest. Check out the newly constructed trail along Blakes Brook as it winds its way up towards the old mill pond. Here beaver, wood ducks and otter will frolic and flourish forever thanks to the conservation easement on placed on this 450 acre tract. It was first protected under the Land and Community Investment Program (LCIP) two decades ago. Check out Nevel Peak where Mount Washington looms into the clouds a distance away. Meander for a moment and reflect at the tomb stones and cellar hole of long ago residents. And, don’t forget to ask about the secret burial site of a Native American whose last wishes long, long ago were to be placed on a beautiful knoll overlooking Blakes Brook. Nature and beauty abound in the Epsom Town Forest. Why not connect to this town treasure yourself?

Tricare Retired Reserve Launches

Falls Church, Va. (AFRNS) – For the first time, members of the Retired Reserve who are not yet age 60, the so-called “gray area” retirees, can purchase Tricare health coverage for themselves and their eligible family members with today’s launch of Tricare Retired Reserve, or TRR.

“This new program offers a health coverage opportunity for “gray area” Guardsmen and Reservists who served America honorably, setting a proud example for today’s forces,” said Rear Adm. Christine Hunter, deputy director of the Tricare Management Activity. “Tricare Retired Reserve will provide an outstanding health benefit.”

Retired Reservists may qualify to purchase TRR coverage if they are younger than 60 and are not eligible for, or enrolled in, the Federal Employees Health Benefits program. They must also be members of the Retired Reserve of a Reserve component and qualified for non-regular retirement. For instructions on how to qualify for and purchase TRR go to www.tricare.mil/trr.

For calendar 2010, the TRR member-only monthly premium is $388.31 ($4,659.72 yearly), and the member and family monthly premium is $976.41 ($11,716.92 yearly). Premiums will be adjusted annually.

The comprehensive health care coverage provided by the premium-based TRR is similar to Tricare Standard. After purchasing TRR, members will receive the Tricare Retired Reserve Handbook, which includes details about covered services, how to get care and who to contact for assistance. Pittsfield Beautification Committee

The Pittsfield Beautification Committee would like to thank those who have supported the work of the committee during the past year. The financial donations that make it possible for us to purchase flowers, arrange for mowing, and maintain our sites. It is also nice to receive compliments as we work in the garden areas.

As fall approaches, the Beautification Committee is making its plans for next spring. We have decided to redo the median plantings located at Tilton Hill, at the Rite Aid blinking light and at the Crescent Avenue by the dam. The Committee has received a donation of 800 spring flowering bulbs to use in these areas. Our plans for these three areas also include both annual and perennial flowers which we must purchase. The Committee will also need to get new top soil along with some railroad ties for plant bed edging. We would appreciate community support as we work to accomplish this plan.

Nicole Ward, who can be reached at 435-5285, will be the coordinator of the median strip gardening project.  Please call Nicole if you wish to be involved with the Beautification Committee project or if you wish to make a donation of needed plants or other materials. Financial donations to this project may be sent to Tina Fife, the Committee Treasurer, at 1394 Upper City Road.

Thank you for your support of the Beautification Committee.
