Of The Rotary
Fifteen members of Women of the Rotary met for our
October meeting at the home of President Fred Okrent. After a
short business meeting, Program Chairperson, Elsie Morse, introduced
Maureen Van Horn, who presented a most interesting program.
Her
brother, a Britisher living in England, was called to Buckingham
Palace to receive a special award and medal. He was one of 25
to receive this award, however, there was a second group for a
different award, making a total of 95 people for the investiture
ceremony. The pomp and circumstance and presentations by Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and bits of history were captured on a
video by a professional photographer; a copy of which was sent to
Maureen by her brother.
Thank you Maureen for sharing this
special video. We hated to see it end.

Letter
I was saddened to learn that the Music, Arts, Home Economics, and
Technology Education Courses were cut by half for this school year
at PMHS, and in surrounding communities.
These youth will
eventually become adult members of the community. No access to
the arts as youth, means no appreciation as adults. Creativity needs to be practiced, just like soccer, to be good at
it. If youth are never given the opportunity to express
themselves, and make creative decisions, then they will have trouble
later in life in problem solving situations.
The Arts allow for
direct expression of each individual, and not just plugging in
different variables into a formula. Each youth needs to solve
problems of what and how to create using available resources.
Participating in the arts also allows for youth to develop a sense
of many amazing things they are capable of.
What happens when
there is no right answer; when there is no grade on the test?
There often is no “right answer” so each individual learns to create
to their best possible abilities, and only they will know if they
have worked their hardest.
With no creative opportunities we will
not be as self reliant, because we will not know how to behave in
situations where no course is written out for us. If youth do
not learn to appreciate these cultural opportunities, then what will
they have as hobbies?
How many times do we see youth and adults
bored with nothing else to do, but to play video games and watch
movies? The arts can be a meaningful hobby that can enhance
quality of life, by appreciating a play, an art exhibit, or a
community concert. Let your School Board know that having a
strong arts curriculum is important to developing well-rounded
citizen.
