It’s The Fabulous Fifties On LRPA After Dark
During The Month Of July
This
Weekend’s Feature: 1951’s “Royal Wedding”
Throughout July, Lakes Region Public Access Television will
feature four films from the fabulous 50’s, a decade known in
cinema, for many things, including the end of the Hollywood
musical; the “Red Scare” and blacklisting of screenwriters; film
noir standouts; and Cold War/atomic panic. Join us each Friday
and Saturday night at 10:30 p.m. as we salute this remarkable
decade. First up is this weekend (July 6 & 7) is the beautiful
1951 MGM musical Royal Wedding, starring Fred Astaire and Jane
Powell. This spectacular film, directed by Stanley Donen,
includes two of Astaire’s most famous dance routines: the “Hat
Rack Dance” sequence (where he makes even a piece of furniture
look good), and the infamous “Dance on the Ceiling” -- if you’ve
never seen it, then you must tune in and watch, because it’s
absolute magic.

a gym
I
attended the NH Democratic Party annual convention last weekend
(June 23) held at the Stratham Middle School. It was a chance to
vote on the party platform, which, by the way, supports the
legalization of marijuana AND same-sex marriage – in contrast to
the Republicans’ platform. And I heard all eleven candidates for
the 1st Congressional District seat. But what really impressed
me was the Stratham Middle School. Complete with a 500-seat
auditorium for the performing arts.
Having attended – and endured – many performances in the
gym/cafeteria/stage at Northwood School and still more in
Gerrish Gymnasium at Coe-Brown, I was envious.
But
this is just another example of what a property-rich town can do
for its students that a property-poor town can’t.
Fortunately, the Concord Monitor reports that “a panel of
lawmakers is studying New Hampshire’s formula for doling out
money for schools.” The Chair says, “The formula’s broken. We’ve
got to fix it.”
But
don’t get your hopes up, poor towns. Republican Rep. Glenn
Cordelli of Tuftonboro “thinks one thing is already off the
table: asking property-rich towns to help pay for the cost of
educating kids in property-poor communities.”
Therein lies the problem. A mentality that sees children as
citizens of their town, and not of their state.
And
while I despair of changing Rep. Cordelli’s mindset, I do know
that there are more poor towns – with more representatives –
than rich towns. And that if voters send more of them to
Concord, the funding formula can be rewritten to provide an
adequate education to ALL of New Hampshire’s children – and not
just the ones who happen to live in Stratham, Tuftonboro and
other property-rich towns.

Obituaries
Lorraine K. DeButts Rudd
WEST NOTTINGHAM – Mrs. Lorraine K. DeButts
Rudd, 72, of West Nottingham, passed away on June 21, 2018 in
the Concord Hospital after a period of declining health.
Born in Exeter, Lorraine was the daughter of Donald Gates and
Shirley Gates (Pender).
Prior to her retirement, Lorraine was employed as a shipper for
American Traditional in Northwood. She also lived in
Hilton Head for a time with her husband where they flipped
several homes together.
She
enjoyed camping but above all, cherished the time she spent with
her family, especially her grandchildren.
She
was predeceased by Richard DeButts, her son, Robert DeButts and
her sister, Donna Gates.
She
is survived by her beloved husband, William M. Rudd; her
children: Laurie McPhee and her husband Frank of Northwood
and Richard DeButts, Jr. and his wife Sheri of Northwood; her
stepchildren: William P. Rudd and his wife Kate of Deerfield,
Ann Deschamps and her husband Timothy of Southborough, MA and
Jeffrey Rudd and his wife Donna of Southborough, MA; her
siblings: Carol Barrett of Epsom, Ronny Gates and his wife Patty
of Epsom, Dicky Gates and his wife Jeannie of TN, Darlene Comeau
and her husband Tim of Epsom, Gladys Gates of Epsom, Cindy
Merrill of Epsom, Debbie Tisbert and her husband Dan of
Deerfield, Ricky Gates and his wife Karen of Pittsfield, Billy
Gates and his wife Charlene of Hillsboro, Donny Gates, Jr. and
husband Steve Hall of Oregon and Reggie Gates and his wife Lynn
of Farmington. She was the loving grandmother to Sarah,
Frank, Shawn, Casey, Makayla, Timothy, Matthew, Tiffany, William
and Evan; and great grandmother to Sophia Aileah, Mckenzie,
Keria, Frank, Lola and Elliot.
Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
