Northwood NH News

Humor and Harmony came to town in May!  Becky Rule, renown author and humorist, alternated stories with music by treasured bluegrass and folk quartet Cordwood.

This year we enjoyed the bonus of stories by Joel Sherburne, whose career was the subject of  Becky’s recent book “60 Years of Cuttin’ the Cheese.

The Friends of the Northwood Library thank Becky, Joel and Cordwood for a great evening of story-telling and music that was enjoyed by over 70 people at the Masonic Lodge in Northwood. The Friends also thank Cavarretta Gardens and Kriya Touch Massage and Bodywork for their generous donations for the silent auction. This important fundraiser makes it possible for the Friends to support the Library and community.

Calling All Gardeners!

The Northwood Garden Club would like to extend the invitation to all…please consider joining us on Friday, June 29th at 6:30 pm at Northwood Congregation Church, 881 First NH Turnpike. Bring your gardening equipment and enthusiasm, as we tackle one of the church’s many perennial beds.  Gardening knowledge is not required, just a strong sense of community spirit and willingness to play in the dirt!

If you’re unable to attend this time, please consider attending one of our meetings. We meet on the third Friday of each month at the Northwood Community Center on Main St at 6:30PM, or join our Facebook page ”Northwood NH Garden Club” to see what project we shall be tackling next.

This Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:

1969’s “Death Rides A Horse”

Join Lakes Region Public Access Television at 10:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday night (June 29 & 30)  for our “LRPA After Dark” presentation of 1969’s spaghetti western “Death Rides a Horse,” starring Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law.

“Death Rides a Horse” is a tale of murder, betrayal and retribution.  A young boy named Bill witnesses the degradation and murder of his family at the hands of outlaws. Fifteen years later, Bill (Law) is an angry, vengeful man bent on finding and killing the men who massacred his family. Bill meets up with Ryan (Van Cleef), an ex-con bounty hunter with his own dark reasons for tracking down the criminals. As the two unlikely partners get closer to their prey, Bill slowly uncovers secrets from Ryan’s past.

Though it may not be one of the most famous examples of its genre, “Death Rides a Horse” is a fan-favorite spaghetti western, filled shoot-outs, low-lives, and bloodlust. The film features a gorgeous score by the renowned film composer Ennio Morricone, as well as a memorable and understated performance by Van Cleef, truly one of the stars of that genre. You know you want to watch it -- so grab your popcorn and join LRPA after dark for this gem from the cinematic past.

Letter To The Editor

Elect Me

Did you get your property tax bill recently? I did, and I’ve hit a bit of a milestone: I broke $9,000. And maybe “broke” is the right word.

While the steady increase over the last 36 years is, in some part, due to inflation, most of the increase is the result of the state’s failure to “cherish” education.

Cherish is the word in the state constitution that the N.H. Supreme Court saw in the Claremont Decision as meaning that it is the responsibility of the state to educate its children.

Instead, after fighting this ruling for years, legislators spent more years deciding what the state’s share of an “adequate” education is: currently $3,600/pupil. An absurd amount considering Northwood pays Coe-Brown over $14,000/pupil.

So, rather than rail about this absurd situation from the outside, I am running to represent the citizens of Northwood, Nottingham, Deerfield and Candia (Rockingham Co. District 32) on the inside.

And this will be my focus: the reform of the education funding system that leaves property-poor towns to pay exorbitantly high taxes while property-rich towns pay so much less. An example: Pittsfield has $433,000/pupil in property valuation to pay for its 583 elementary and secondary students. Portsmouth has over $2.3 million/pupil to spend.

We need a new system, and we are not going to get it by litigation. We will only get it by legislation.

And while some may claim to be “Tax Fighters,” as our Senator John Reagan has declared each election, they are, in fact, Tax Shifters – down-shifting costs to towns to balance the budget at the state level. Not just education funding, but also school construction and employee retirement.

Please vote for me in November.

Tom Chase

Democratic Candidate for the N.H. House

Rockingham Co. District 32
