A Christmas Poem
The fireplace crackles, our trees trimmed in lights;
Snowflakes are falling, in thes still of the night;
Christmas packages, all wrapped with care;
Hidden from children , somewhere downstairs;
The smell of fresh cookies, and Mom baking pies;
Kid’s whisper of Santa, with a gleam in their eyes;
A sweater for Grandma, a bone for the dog;
A new bowl for water, for Timmy’s pet frog;
A bottle of Sherry for my Mom and Dad;
This is the best Christmas, I’ve ever had;
But there’s more to the season than gifts to and from;
It’s a time full of caring for the lost and forlorn;
It’s a time for the thinking of more than one’s self;
A time for the wishing of hope and good health;
A magical time, when we give from the heart;
A time to be caring and make a new start;
A time to be wishing for all that we’re worth;
For goodwill toward man and Peace on this Earth!
Merry Christmas and God Bless

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Steven Sousa of Pirate Mechanical has generously donated a wall
mount heater for the swap shop, he even had it installed. All
the volunteers and patrons so appreciate the gesture and the
warmth, no more freezing toes.
On
another note, have you seen the plans for the municipal
building? They seem to be rushing this project! It was brought
to the budget committee with no cost figures. Can’t vote on
something if you don’t know what it’s going to cost, or are we
supposed to just trust that the selectmen will do the right
thing. I don’t think so! I’m reminded of our $20,000 gate.
I
believe we need a municipal building, but the people putting
this plan together need to do a much better job of presenting
this information to the taxpayers. There are things on the plans
that seem excessive. How many meeting rooms does this town need?
It seems every public building has one. An exercise room filled
with equipment is an expense I don’t think is realistic, four
bathrooms in the fire dept. also seems excessive. It would seem
that the fire dept. would need a kitchen more than the police
dept. Surely anyone who has spoken to any member of either dept.
knows these people don’t want to share anything.
Let’s build this municipal building, it is past time but let’s
build what is practical for us, no bells and whistles.

This Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:
1935’s “Scrooge”
Join Lakes Region Public Access Television at 10:30 p.m. this
Friday and Saturday night (December 21 & 22) for our “LRPA After
Dark” presentation of 1935’s Christmas classic, “Scrooge,”
starring Sir Seymour Hicks in the title role.
“Scrooge” is a timeless and sincere telling of the classic
Charles Dickens story in which miser Ebenezer Scrooge is visited
by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future, and learns
the true meaning of the holiday. While not as well known as its
MGM’s 1938 movie “A Christmas Carol,” “Scrooge” holds the
distinction of being the first feature-length sound adaptation
of Dickens’s story. Its star, Sir Seymour Hicks, was a legendary
British actor, playwright and theatre manager. Of all the roles
that he held in his illustrious career, he performed the role of
Ebenezer Scrooge over 2,000 times, both on stage and in film.
Hick’s interpretation of Scrooge deserves to be more widely seen
and appreciated by by film fans everywhere. So grab your popcorn
and meet us after dark for this wonderful holiday treat.
Join LRPA After Dark as we celebrate the holidays all month
long:
December 28 & 29: 1941’s “Meet John Doe”
And
on Tuesday, December 25: a day of family-friendly holiday
movies, shows and cartoons!

All
Smoke
I
like serving on the Northwood Budget Committee because I always
learn something new. This year was no different. I learned that
“all smoke is bad smoke.”
This came up in our consideration of a warrant article presented
by the Deputy Police Chief. It seems that their “fire-paks” are
going to become obsolete and need to be replaced. These are
“self-contained breathing apparatus” (SCBA) they they wear when
fighting fires. Think scuba tanks for fire-fighting.
“Which fires?” I asked. “All of them,” I was told. “All smoke is
bad smoke.”
So
this expenditure was supported unanimously by the Select Board
and the Budget Committee. And though it won’t be cheap ($187K),
it will be spread over 5 years in a lease/purchase agreement.
And they should be here before the old ones become obsolete.
Another “big ticket” item we discussed was the purchase of a new
highway dump truck with a snow plow with a wing. This will
replace the “vintage” truck we own that only has a single-blade
snow plow.
My
big learning here was that in 2018, we spent $25,000 on repairs
to the old truck, while the new truck - financed lease/purchase
over 7 years - will cost $26,000/year. Seemed like a no-brainer
to me.
It
also turned out that there is about $68K in the Highway
Equipment Capital Reserve Fund which might be used to bring the
cost down further.
All
this left me wondering why the Select Board didn’t think of this
a year ago, before they spent $25K on the old truck.
If
you want to learn more about the town and its finances, join me
on the Budget Committee. There will 6 open positions on the town
ballot on March 11.
