Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC)
recently announced that Coe-Brown senior Alice Ewing has been
named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Miss Ewing joins approximately 16,000 other Semifinalists
nationwide in this annual program who were the highest scoring
students in their states on the 2017 PSAT which served as an
initial screen of program entrants. Miss Ewing along with
these other academically talented students, has an opportunity
to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit
scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered
next spring.
To
be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must
fulfill several requirements including submitting a detailed
application and essay to advance to the Finalist level of the
competition. About 90% of the Semifinalists are expected
to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists
will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar
title. Congratulations to Alice Ewing on this achievement.
This Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:
1951’s “At War With The Army”
Join Lakes Region Public Access Television at 10:30 p.m. this
Friday and Saturday night (November 9 & 10) for our “LRPA After
Dark” presentation of 1951’s musical comedy “At War With the
Army,” starring the classic comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry
Lewis.
Sergeant Victor Puccinelli and Private First Class Alvin Korwin
serve in the U.S. Army during WWII. Before enlisting, they were
best friends and partners in a nightclub song-and-dance act.
Since enlisting and serving on the same base, they tend to get
on each other’s nerves. Puccinelli (Martin), a suave ladies’
man, is good at his boring, paper-pushing desk job, but dreams
of being transferred to active duty overseas. His CO has no
intentions of letting him leave, planning instead to commission
him as the company’s Warrant Officer. Korwin (Lewis) is a
lovable goofball who works in the mess hall but can’t do
anything right. Everything he touches turns to disaster. He’s on
K.P. duty as a result of his incompetence. Korwin begs for a
weekend pass to visit his wife, but can’t seem to catch a break.
Things are further complicated by Puccinelli’s love life, which
is in a constant whirlwind, plus the fact that Korwin wants his
old partner to rehearse for a USO show and also to record a song
they have co-written and, much to Puccinelli’s chagrin. Will
Puccinelli get to see active duty? Will Korwin get to see his
wife back home? Most importantly, will the guys get together and
put on the show?
Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made 16 movies together over the
span of their careers. “At War With the Army” was their third
movie, but their first starring vehicle. Their roles in this
film, as in all of their movies, follow typecasting: Martin as
the handsome Romeo, Lewis as the luckless jokester. “At War With
the Army” has everything that you’d expect from a Martin and
Lewis movie: loads of wonderful slapstick moments, as well as
songs, shtick, crazy mix-ups and zany antics, and even a spoof
of Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald in “Going My Way.” This was
vintage Martin and Lewis, before egos and jealousy got in the
way. If it sounds like fun, then grab your popcorn and meet us
after dark for this wacky sendup of Army bureaucracy.
Northwood Advent Christian Church Homecoming Celebration
The
Northwood Advent Christian Church invites you to a day of
praise, thanksgiving and worship on Sunday, November 11, a
Homecoming celebration. The church is located at 113 School
Street in Northwood, rt 107. Sunday November 11 will culminate
in a pot luck fellowship dinner at 5:00 and a service of Praise
and Thanksgiving at 6:00 with Jon Taber from Alton Bay. Jon
plays the keyboards and will lead us in new and old songs of
praise along with friends bringing special music, duets,
quartets etc. It will be an enjoyable praise filled night you
will not want to miss. A great way to get our hearts in a
Thankful attitude for the Thanksgiving holiday. For the pot luck
dinner, bring a dish to share if you would like or just come
anyway even if you can’t bring a dish!! There will be plenty for
all. Come meet old friends and meet new ones too.
The
day will start with our morning worship service at 10:00 AM. We
will have some good music, maybe even a trumpet number and a
message from the Word of God. We hope you can be with us for any
or all these meetings. We pray God’s blessing on you this
Thanksgiving.

On
the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we invite all to engage in the
true holiday spirit with a concert with Joyce Andersen and
Harvey Reid. These two accomplished musicians will be performing
a mix of wonderful, uplifting music and perhaps some holiday
tunes as well.
Andersen & Reid will play solo sets and perform together, and
will keep you on the edge of your seats with a special uplifting
Sunday repertoire of old gospel songs, new spirituals and any
other songs they see fit to play that fit into the spirit of the
day. Expect slide guitar, dazzling fiddle, razor-sharp duet
harmonies, guitar instrumentals, down-home bluegrass, and some
rousing sing-a-longs.

Northwood School had a nice treat! Author Sean Patrick
Guidera stopped into 3rd grade to talk about his book Ethan the
Raindrop. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, Sean!
Mrs. Lenharth’s 7th grade students at Northwood School crushed
their assignment on cells! They had to create a cell model and
use it to show function of cell parts! Future scientist at
Northwood School!!
The Northwood Brownie and Daisy Girl Scouts led the pledge
of allegiance at the Northwood School Board meeting.
Potluck Harvest Supper And Antique Tool Program
The
Northwood Historical Society will be holding our annual harvest
potluck supper and program on November 20, 2018 at the Northwood
Community Hall located at the corner of Main and School Street.
The
supper will start at 6:00 PM, bring a salad, side dish, main
dish or dessert to share and your place setting for an evening
of good conversation and great food. Beverages will be
provided.
The
program starting at 7:00 PM will feature Neil English sharing
his vast knowledge of antique tools. Neil has presented
many informative and audience interactive programs for the
Northwood Historical Society, we are sure you will enjoy this
program as well. If you have a “what is it tool” you would
like to know more about, bring it or a picture for discussion.
The
supper and program are free and open to the public, you are
welcome to attend both events or just the program. We
hope you will plan on joining us for an evening of meeting
neighbors, making new friends and learning interesting facts
about antique tools and their use. We welcome new members
and those interested in learning more about the history of
Northwood.
