Letter To The Editor
My
wife and I moved to New Hampshire in 2011 after living in five
other states through school and work. Northwood was a best fit
(schools, taxes, services, and commute). Our oldest is now in
second grade and our youngest will be in kindergarten next year.
I
wanted to take this opportunity to thank the teachers, school
board, administrators, parents, bus drivers, and others in this
community that have stepped up and kept things moving forward.
Things happen, I learned that from Forrest Gump… it’s how you
respond and recover that ultimately matters. There is a
national shortage of bus drivers, it’s no surprise it would be
extremely difficult to keep buses moving in these times. It’s
not just this town, it’s all over the U.S. and it’s not getting
any easier. I want to say thank you to anyone in this community
who continues to find positive solutions to this national
epidemic.
I
also understand how difficult it is to work in education and
have read some really negative letters about Northwood School
and I don’t get it. I have been blown away by the positive
attitudes and resiliency I have seen in every teacher,
administrator and school board members I have gotten to know.
There really are a lot of people that care about the kids and
it is refreshing to see.
My
son loves going to school and speaks so highly of his teachers
(we see you Ms. Bolduc and Mrs. Gibson) and classes, and he gets
excited for Mondays. It has been great to watch his confidence
grow in the last two years. It’s not all puppies and rainbows
and things happen, as I said earlier, but it has been great to
see how people respond and recover in these times. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Ryan P. Hanavan

This Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:
1953’s “The Hitch-Hiker”
Join Lakes Region Public Access Television at 10:30 p.m. this
Friday and Saturday night (September 29 & 30) for our “LRPA
After Dark” presentation of 1953’s gritty crime thriller “The
Hitch-Hiker,” starring Edmond O’Brien, Frank Lovejoy, and
William Talman.
“The Hitch-Hiker” was inspired by the events of real-life serial
killer Billy Cook, a psychopath who murdered six people on a
22-day killing spree in the early 1950s. The film was directed
by Ida Lupino, a well-known actress who went on to a successful
career as a director at a time in Hollywood when female
directors were very scarce. In fact, Lupino was the only female
member of the Director’s Guild from the late 1940s through the
early 1950s and is still considered one of Hollywood’s most
prolific female directors. “The Hitch-Hiker” earned Lupino and
her cast strong reviews and was a box-office success. It went on
to be one of 25 films selected in 1998 for preservation by the
National Film Registry. In his review of “The Hitch-Hiker,”
noted critic Leonard Maltin said: “Well-made suspense yarn about
two men on a hunting trip whose car is commandeered by a
murderous fugitive. Good performances, especially by a venal
Talman in the title role.” What more does a movie-lover need? So
grab your popcorn and join LRPA after dark for this crime drama
from the past.

Letter To Editor
I
was thinking about getting old the other day and the lie about
“the golden years.” I don’t know who came up with that phrase,
and I don’t know anyone over 65 who believes it. It should be
struck from the language, never to be spoken again!
That being said, when choosing between growing old and the
alternative, I’m all for growing old. I turned 70 four years ago
and decided to retire, looking forward to working in my garden,
reading good books and sitting in the sun. That lasted about 15
minutes.
I
am back to work but I thought it was time to get involved with
the town again. My intentions are good, my approach may need
some work.
I
recently attended a recycling committee meeting. The chairman
was not interested in anything I had to say and believe me, I’m
not whining. I’m just saying I left after he said he thought the
committee should go on hiatus until the board of selectmen call
them back. I wonder how long he plans on waiting; he may be in
for a long siege.
We
need a new swap shop building and it needs to be relocated so it
will be more visible to the attendants. We have volunteers who
keep the building in order and, as I have said before, the money
would come from the expendable trust fund and will actually save
us money. Seems like a win, win!

Next Time,
