Northwood Elementary School Junior Achievement
Northwood Elementary School is excited to invite members of the
Northwood community to be Junior Achievement volunteers! This is an
opportunity for you to be involved with the school, and to share
your experiences with the next generation.
Junior
Achievement (JA) is a national program that provides educational
programs free of charge to schools and other organizations. They
provide all of the materials as well as training, if desired, to
present the programs. The 1st grade examines “Our Families”, and
the next grades progress through “Our Community”, “Our City”, “Our
Region”, and “Our Country”. Middle and high school offerings focus
on Economics, Business, and Finance.
The
program has been offered on a limited basis for the past few years.
In order to expand and give every student the opportunity to
benefit from the different modules, we need your help! The teachers
at NES are very enthusiastic about this program but JA guidelines
require community members willing to participate in the program.
Teachers remain in the room to provide support; the volunteers
present the information to the students.
You
will need to complete a background check and fingerprinting at the
SAU, and fill out a few forms, but we will try to make it as
painless as possible! JA provides an optional 30 minute training
session which covers classroom management and an overview of the
kits.
Once
you are set to go, you will be paired with a teacher and the two of
you will schedule the best dates and times for you to present.
Programs run 5 to 8 weeks and take about 45 to 60 minutes each,
depending on grade level and program.
For
more information on Junior Achievement, please visit their website
at www.janewengland.org. If you
are interested in supporting NES and being part of this program,
please contact Kelly at [email protected].

Re-Elect Bruce Hodgdon For
State Representative
I would
like to introduce myself as your current State Representative for
the Town of Northwood.
My name
is Bruce Hodgdon I am a native of Northwood where I also attended
Brookside School in the Narrows, Northwood Elementary School and
Coe-Brown Academy. My Wife (of 43 years) and I have two children, a
son David, daughter Jen and six delightful grandchildren. I am
president of Hodgdon & Son Inc., a construction company you may have
noticed on projects for the Town of Northwood, Northwood Elementary
School, Coe-Brown Academy, Meadows at Northwood and other projects
in the surrounding communities.
I was
elected in 2012 and signed on to the House Transportation Committee
because this is an area I am very familiar with being an owner of
commercial vehicles and a holder of a commercial drivers license.
While on this committee I co - sponsored hb587 this bill helps cdl
drivers with their medical cards and prevents unnecessary re
testing.
I am
honored to have the endorsement of the New Hampshire Liberty
Alliance and the National Federation of Independent Business. If
elected to my 2nd term I will continue to vote for Responsible
spending, reducing regulatory burdens on small business and
homeowners, limited government, increasing job growth, protecting
the 2nd amendment and uphold and protect the New Hampshire and
United States Constitutions.

The
Pope’s Visit
In case
you missed it, last week the Pope visited South Korea to minister to
its 5.1 million Catholics. And while hundreds of thousands gathered
for a public mass in Seoul, the NY Times reported that at a rally of
hundreds of Protestants a few blocks away, “a Presbyterian pastor
shouted ‘the enemy king has appeared at the center of our nation.’ …
The evangelican Protestants sang hymns and danced, shouting that
they were sounding ‘the trumpets of spiritual war’ against the ‘idol
worship’ and ‘satanic forces’ … Roman Catholicism represents.”
Pretty
strong stuff, but not so far removed from the fear and hatred I
heard expressed growing up as a Southern Baptist. It left me a
strong believer in the first Amendment to the Constitution
prohibiting the establishment of religion by the state – i.e., the
separation of church and state.
For
this reason, I am dismayed that the NH Supreme Court has left
standing the Education Tax Credit, despite a lower court’s decision
that it unlawfully diverts public money to religious schools.
If the
court does not re-visit this decision as it said it would should a
case be brought by a plaintiff with “standing,” it would be my goal
to join with other legislators to undo this law.
Please
don’t see this as opposition to religion. You practice yours and
I’ll practice mine. But we must not allow the state to intrude into
these matters of faith, however round-about.
And if
you don’t see the merits of separation – and tolerance – I suggest
that you look to Iraq and the problems that Shiia and Sunni are
running into in an attempt to govern their country. At least in
Washington, they aren't shooting at each other.
