Alexander Bobowski of Northwood, N.H., (03261) a fourth-year student
in the computer science program in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College
of Computing and Information Sciences, made the Dean’s List for the
Fall 2013 semester.
Degree-seeking undergraduate students are eligible for Dean’s List
if their quarterly GPA is greater than or equal to 3.400; they do
not have any grades of “Incomplete”, “D” or “F”; and they have
registered for, and completed, at least 12 credit hours.
Congratulations, Alexander!
Letter To The Editor
Are
corporations simply associations of people, and therefore entitled
to the constitutional rights of people as laid out in our
Constitution? This is an argument you often hear when discussing
the petition warrant articles that are found on the ballots of local
towns this year.
In his
book Corporations Are Not People, Jeffrey Clements, an attorney with
much experience representing people and businesses, says,
“Corporations are economic tools created by state law; corporation
shares are property.” He points out that, “A corporation is a
government-defined legal structure for doing business.” It is also
of interest that there is no definition of a corporation in the
Citizens United Supreme Court decision, leaving one to wonder why
this was left out?
As
Clements notes, the people who form a corporation under a state law
“have all the same rights they had before they decided to
incorporate and the same inalienable rights of all Americans. The
corporation, however, does not, and we are not required to pretend
that the corporation is the same as people...Once we recall that the
rules for corporations come from us, for the betterment of our
nation, the idea of ‘corporate rights’ will be exposed as
ridiculous.”
When
you go to vote on the warrant article on your ballot, if 25 or more
of your fellow citizens were concerned enough about this issue to
sign a petition to put it there, ask yourself this question: Does
our Constitution give the right of free speech and other
Constitutional rights to economic tools that the states may create
by passing laws which may be repealed? Our rights as people under
the Constitution are inalienable, but a law may be declared
unconstitutional by a court and/or be changed by a vote of a
legislature. Vote Yes on Article 19.

Northwood Community World Day Of Prayer.
Women,
men, and children in more than 170 countries and regions will
celebrate World Day of Prayer, Friday, March 7, 2014. This year,
the women of WDP Committee of Egypt invite us into a time of worship
with the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am making a way in the
wilderness and streams in the desert.” With these words as backdrop,
we are invited to learn about Egypt’s history and rich cultural
diversity.
An
exploration of the Samaritan woman’s conversation with Jesus at the
well offers us an opportunity for deep dialogue and reflection about
the borders that we, like Jesus and the Samaritan woman, must cross
to get to streams of living water. The woman by the well has a
theological conversation with Jesus that ends with action. Our
motto “informed prayer leads to prayerful action” follows that
example. Jesus and the woman were able to transcend their religious
and cultural differences and build a common ground that then
empowered the woman to bring change to her community.
This
year’s service will be on March 7 at 1 p.m at Northwood Advent
Christian Church at 113 School Street (Route 107) “handicap
accessible” to join the women of Egypt in prayer and song to support
ecumenical efforts toward justice, peace, healing and wholeness.
The annual offering supports the work of World Day of Prayer USA
and helps meet the needs of families in Egypt and around the world
who are victims of many forms of poverty, violence, and justice.
Besides
the above mentioned church, other participants are the Northwood
Congregational Church UCC and the St. Joseph Catholic Church.
World
Day of Prayer USA promotes justice and equality for women through
prayer, partnerships, service, and celebration. For more
information about the national World Day of Prayer USA go to (www.wdp-usa.org).
Letter
To The Editor
To the
Editor,
I
really want to talk about the school year 14/15 budget, I am proud
of it because it represents a $364K reduction while catching us up
in some very important areas.
But
first I want to address the letter about a School Board Member (me)
in last week’s Sun. There are many misstatements in it like the
sentence about a towns fund balance. I never mentioned it. So I am
not going to nitpick or have a fight in the paper but instead ask
you to consider that the writer in my opinion recently abandoned our
town in its hour of need by resigning his Selectman position at a
very difficult time.
He has
a history of misstating facts like the letter last year where he
only used part of the students enrollment in Northwood and
Nottingham simply to hoodwink you. And finally, last year, with the
School Board’s blessing, I went to court pro se to get permission to
have a special election to allow 6 teachers an incentive to retire.
This “with all due respect, gentleman” fought me in court every step
of the way and he lost at each step. The court allowed the election
and you overwhelmingly approved a deal that will save the taxpayers
over 600K. He was not at one budget meeting, School Board Meeting,
or the Deliberative Session. I did not miss one.
Next
year’s school budget, while it does come in at almost $364 less than
this year’s budget, has in it many expenditures that are sorely
needed. Technology, textbooks, science and math supplies are all
areas that we are finally able to improve upon while doing our part
to reduce taxes. It’s not about the writer or myself, it’s about the
students. I will not misuse your money or let you down.
