Thank You From Santa’s Helpers
Thank
you to the citizens and businesses of Northwood for your generous
support of the Northwood Santa’s Helpers program.
The
members of Northwood Fire-Rescue and the families you assisted,
appreciate all of the gifts, toys, clothing and gift cards you
provided this year. Without your assistance, we would not have able
to wrap and deliver gifts to 68 Northwood children. Thank you for
making it possible for the families to have gifts for their children
to open at Christmas and brighten the day.
We
appreciate Northwood Heritage True Value, Northwood Post Office,
Wilder’s Flooring, Northwood Garage and Northwood TDBank for
providing space for our donation boxes and all of the donations that
were delivered to the Fire Station.
Northwood Fire Rescue Association wishes you and your families a

State and Other Homeschoolers
Epsom
resident Nancy Heath raises a question about the tax impact of Free
Staters. She says “many are homeschoolers. What services, tax
credits might these activists want from our school districts?”
NH does
indeed have an education tax credit program which enables
homeschoolers to receive a scholarship of up to $750 for parents
whose income is less than 300% of the federal poverty level. The
scholarship fund is raised by private donations. Very few
homeschoolers will actually end up with any of this money.
In
addition, most homeschoolers, especially Free Staters, do not have
their children participate in public school activities or ask for
any services from the public schools. Furthermore, school districts
are not required to provide special education services for
homeschooled children. The cost to taxpayers for homeschoolers is
therefore negligible.
On the
other hand, homeschoolers will pay far more in property tax and
spend more on their children’s education than they will ever receive
in tax credits. In Northwood, for example, the average homeowner
pays more than $4,000 annually in property tax, most of which goes
to pay for public schools. Northwood in fact appropriates some $12
million to educate some 700 students, or about $17,000 for each
public school student.
Homeschoolers pay for all children’s public schooling and then for
their own children’s education. Consequently, the more homeschoolers
there are, the lower the taxes and the more tax money that can be
spent on each public school student.
