Happy
10th Anniversary To J&B Auto Sales Of Northwood LLC
The
Gardner family at J&B Auto Sales welcomes you to their upcoming
anniversary event.
Brian
Gardner started buying and selling cars on his front lawn before he
even had his driver’s license 20 years ago. He began the current
business in 2002 by renting the property where he now is, and
purchased it in 2004. J&B Auto (which stood for previous owners Jim
and Beth) now stands for Brian and his wife Jennifer.
The
first 5 years he concentrated on buying cars to get a good
inventory. He added a quality mechanic and added the trade name "J&B
Auto Sales and Repair" to reach out to the public for inspections
and oil changes. Another big change for the Gardners was living in
the apartment located at the property, while their dream house was
being built on the area of land that extends onto Lakeshore Drive.
The family was growing just as fast as the business. Brian and Jen
have three children: Dylan 10 years old, Trevor 8, and Serena 3.
The next
5 years the business exploded in many directions. They added classic
cars, motorcycles, four wheelers, and golf carts to their sales
inventory and offered financing options to potential purchasers.
They now have a full service mechanic shop, 24 hour towing and a
loaner car available. They are a U-Haul dealer and do everything
from tires and alignments to bed liners and hitches.
Northwood Town Reports
With the
change this year from traditional town and school district annual
meetings to SB2, a large number of annual town reports are still
available. If you did not pick one up when you went to vote this
year or are a summer resident who never received one, please pick up
a copy at the town hall or Chesley Memorial Library.
There is
a lot of information about the town and school district including
board and committee reports, financial reports, facts about town
assets and property, and some great artwork and photos submitted by
Coe Brown Academy students. There is no charge for the reports and
they are available to pick up during regular business hours.
The
Gardner family and all their employees would like to invite everyone
to stop by, look around and share this special anniversary on
Saturday, June 30th. They will have a hot dog ready with your name
on it. They wish to thank all the faithful patrons over the years,
thank God for being there every step of the way, and look forward to
the next 10 years and beyond.

Are you
ready for the onslaught of political advertising about to descend on
us?
Do you,
like the majority of Americans, feel uncomfortable about all the
money in our elections, especially because we don’t know where it’s
coming from? Do you wonder, as you shop, if your purchase of this
roll of paper towels will end up funding ads that will encourage us
to vote against our own best interests?
Are you
not even quite sure what our "best interests" are anymore?
That’s a lot of questions. Our job as voters is to do our best to
find out the answers before we vote. One way that I do that is to
follow the work of the Coalition for Open Democracy
http://www.coalitionforopendemocracy.org/, the organization that
carries on the work of our own Doris "Granny D" Haddock. I also find
out some sources of a candidate’s campaign funding at Open Secrets,
http://www.opensecrets.org/.
In NH candidates are supposed to report their contributions and
expenditures to the Secretary of State,
http://cfs.sos.nh.gov/cfs/public/default.aspx. But that’s hardly
the whole story.
The elephant in the room of campaign finance is the Supreme Court
decision from early 2010 that we refer to as "Citizens United." I
love this movie about that decision:
http://www.storyofstuff.org/movies-all/story-of-citizens-united-v-fec/.
We need to ask ourselves, especially given the recent coverage of
the enormous rise in income inequality over recent decades (view
slate.com article), if this decision is really good for our
democracy.

The NH Legislature tried to get rid of RGGI (the Regional Greenhouse
Gas Initiative) last year, and this year. RGGI is a regional
market-based program to reduce carbon emissions at the lowest cost.
The bills to get rid of RGGI were crafted by out of state interests
in conjunction with libertarian and conservative NH legislators. As
Free State Rep Andrew Manuse, who apparently is a climate change
expert, summarized for them: "The reasons used to promote RGGI were
based on false, exaggerated and highly politicized science…. there
is no scientific evidence to support the idea that RGGI does
anything to solve this alleged problem."
The bill
that came forward last year passed the House and Senate, but was
vetoed by Governor Lynch, and the veto was sustained. A pile of
legislators tried to stop RGGI again this year. The most recent
version of the bill, which passed in early June doesn’t eliminate
the program, but provides a clear path for New Hampshire to get out
of it. If the Governor vetoes it, that veto may be overridden this
time.
Two days
before the recent bill passed, RGGI’s program administrator released
a report that said after 3 years, average carbon dioxide emissions
in the 10-state region have fallen by 23%. And a recent report by
the Analysis Group in Boston found that RGGI had generated $17
million in value for NH’s economy, and created 458 jobs here.
This entire roller coaster with RGGI in the Legislature speaks
volumes about how distorted New Hampshire politics has gotten over
the past two years. Bad science, bad economics, and ironically,
significant grabs to control NH’s future, in the name of liberty.
I’m hoping that Rep. Manuse’s departure from the Legislature
symbolizes that this era is fading. But keep your eyes open.
