Stroke
And Osteoporosis Screenings Coming To Northwood
Residents living in and around the Northwood, NH community can be
screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture.
Our Lady of Lourdes/St. Joseph’s Parish, Parish Center will host
Life Line Screening on May 15, 2012. The site is located at 844 1st
NH Turnpike in Northwood.
Four key
points every person needs to know:
• Stroke
is the third leading cause of death and leading cause of permanent
disability.
• 80% of
stroke victims had no apparent warning signs prior to their stroke.
•
Preventive ultrasound screenings can help you avoid a stroke.
•
Screenings are fast, noninvasive, painless, affordable and
convenient.
Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as
blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic
aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a
strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to
assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both
men and women.
Packages start at $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to
complete. For more information regarding the screenings or to
schedule an appointment, call 1-877-237-1287 or visit our website at
www.lifelinescreening.com.
Pre-registration is required.

There’s
a primary in September and an election in November. Every ten years,
after the census, states are required to redistrict at all levels of
government. Have you been keeping an eye on what changes we might
see at the ballot box this fall?
For
those of us in Northwood, there are major changes. The first is that
we have moved into the 2nd Congressional District, along with
Deerfield. Our Executive Council district is still in the
legislative process. Our Senate district is still 17, but the
contours of the district have changed. As for the NH House, as of
now Northwood would have its own representative and also share one
with the other three towns in the old Rockingham 1 district.
However,
there are lawsuits underway over the redistricting plan that passed
this spring, a process that seemed to take forever and was done well
out of the public eye. In our area, as in many others around the
state, those who want to step forward and run for one of the 400
seats in the NH House are left with many questions about exactly
what and where their districts will be.
In 2006,
the voters of NH passed a constitutional amendment that was intended
to give every community in the state their own representative if
they met a certain population level. A number of plans were
presented, but the one that passed may very well be
unconstitutional. There were 62 towns or wards of cities which
should have had their own representatives, but which are combined in
sometimes rather odd ways with other towns or city wards.
Voters
might want to keep a close eye on this. What your ballot will look
like in November will depend on how this shakes out.

To The Editor
You have
a unique opportunity to speak out on an issue that should be very
near and dear to each of us here in Northwood. On May 16th at 6:30
pm there will be an open forum meeting at the School Library. It is
your chance to sound off, question, offer ideas and, in general, get
involved with our school.
There
are many new policy changes being suggested, kids can now chew gum,
a homework policy that is "unenforceable" being revised to what I
would call a no policy, and a new one that would allow a student
with all Ds to play sports. I know how I feel about these policies,
how about you? Come have your say about this or anything else.
