NALMC and the Friends of Northwood Meadows State
Park invite you to a Leopold Bench Building Workshop Saturday,
October 1st, at the NALMC kiosk at Harmony Hill Farm in Northwood.
The benches will be placed at the Northwood Town
Hall, the Chesley Memorial Library and Northwood Meadows State Park,
for all to use.
All are welcome to join us for this fun and
informational community-based workshop on Saturday, October 1st from
9 am to 2 pm. You will need to bring work gloves, a hammer, a picnic
lunch, water, and a lawn chair if you think you might want a place
to sit before the benches are ready.
For more information, please call Kim Paradis at
664-7744.
Flu Shot Clinic
The Rochester District Visiting Nurses will provide
flu shots on Monday, October 3rd from 3-5 pm at the Northwood Town
Hall. The cost of the shot is $30.00 and is free to anyone with
Medicare Part B. They also now accept Medicare HMO. Please be sure
to bring your Medicare card with you to the clinic.
Despite three straight Thursdays of rain, your
Northwood Farmers Market vendors are still there with lots of great
fall produce, and we will continue to be there Thursday afternoons
until October 6. Then we’ll head indoors for Saturday markets in the
Masonic Hall starting Saturday, October 15. Come out and support
your local farmers.
Letter
Earlier this year, a fellow townsperson and I had a
letter-to-the-editor exchange about Medicare in which he repeated
the claim from Republican candidates last fall that the new
healthcare law was cutting Medicare. This was in response to my
letter about the Paul Ryan budget proposal which Frank Guinta, our
congressman, voted for, in which Medicare for those under 55 would
become a voucher program, and the healthcare law would be repealed,
including those parts which benefit us seniors like the closing of
the prescription donut hole, a change for which we can thank former
Congresswoman Carol Shea Porter, a driving force to include this in
the law.
I thought it might be good to provide an update on
this issue, since many senior citizens were bamboozled into voting
for Republicans last year by the claim that Medicare was being cut.
The changes were actually the removal of the extra payments to
private insurance companies for Medicare Advantage policies that
cost us, the taxpayers, more for the same services that traditional
Medicare provides at a lower cost.
And guess what? Nobody is losing their Medicare
Advantage, and more people have signed up for those types of
policies than the government even expected! Amazingly, even with the
cuts to payments to the insurance companies, they are still offering
the policies and people still like them enough to sign on.
Another GOP deception debunked. More information is

Town Wide Yard Sale
Sellers And Buyers Needed!
The sixth graders, their teachers and parents of
Northwood Elementary School are organizing a town-wide event
Columbus Day Weekend to raise money for their science field trip to
Merrowvista later this school year. Due to budget cutbacks, the
school will not be able to fund this educational and fun trip that
has become a tradition at our school. We are joining forces with
Northwood and the surrounding communities to hold yard sales all
over Northwood.
Here’s how it works for those in Northwood who want
to have a yard sale: we put your name, address and days/hours of
sale on a map and distribute that map to as many people in as many
communities as possible. Your donation is only $10. You keep all the
sales from your yard sale.
For those who love to shop yard sales: for the mere
cost of $2, we will provide you with a detailed map of all the yard
sales taking place that day. Space is Not limited, but our time is,
so please call Julie Doiron at 942-7126 to place your address on the
map or to purchase a map.
Orders for map space are due by Tuesday, October
4th. Maps will be sold up to and including the morning of the yard
sale but preordering will insure you a copy. If you know one of our
sixth graders, they will be able to help also. Thank you for
supporting the children.
HLWC’s Fall Events
On September 6th, twelve members of the Harvey Lake
Woman’s Club traveled to Derry for lunch at the Cracker Barrel
Restaurant. Then we went to the Robert Frost Farm Museum in East
Derry. A video of Frost reading his poetry and Leslie and four
children acting them out was shown followed by a tour of his house.
Many of the members were moved by childhood memories of their
grandparents’ homes.
GFWC HLWC’s Annual Guest Night and Pot Luck Supper
for spouses and friends will be held October 4, 2011, at 6 p.m. in
the Fellowship Hall at the Northwood Congregational Church. Greeter
will be Marie Bapple and the inspiration will be given by Janet
Henry. There will be a 50/50 raffle. The evening entertainment will
be provided by the CBNA Music Department.
On October 8th, Ginny Rogers, president, and Elaine
Covey, vice president, will be attending GFWC NH Fall Field/Fall
Rally in Exeter, NH, at Christ Church on Pine Street.
A workshop to make comfort pillows for cancer
patients at Concord Hospital is scheduled for October 14th, 9 a.m.
to 12 noon.
The Club will also be hosting GFWC NH Districts 1,
2, and 3 Fall Conference on October 29th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the

with the food as usual, so if you missed it this year please plan on
joining us next year for our 2012 Annual Water Cross.
