Watershed Has Diving Boat
The
Northwood Lake Watershed Association’s Dive Team has recently been
gifted a boat for the use of hand pulling of milfoil on the lake.
MacCallums Boathouse is the generous donor. Brad Hall, Diving
Team Coordinator, is currently converting the pontoon boat into a
diving and collection station. Implementing the Dive Team will
reduce the number of times the lake needs to be chemically treated.
Exotic Weed Update The Northwood Lake Watershed Association is
planning a June milfoil treatment, pending the NH Department of
Environmental Services permit. Areas to be treated will have
signage posted. The Watershed Association is also planning for
Phragmites chemical treatment in September. Phragmites are sprayed
prior to the fall when the plants start to draw in nutrients.
All identified patches are planned for treatment.
Dates to Remember The Annual Meeting will be July 16th.
Margaret Hagen will be the featured speaker. Her topic is
“Landscaping at the Water’s Edge.”
“Starry Loony Night,” a new event, is planned for boaters to
meet in the center of the lake after sundown and have an expert on
the night sky speak and have a discussion with the group.
The
Northwood Lake Watershed Calendars will be available soon with lots
of giveaways!
July 30th will bring the popular Boat Parade back. Marie Damon
is the Chairman. Start planning your boat’s theme.

NH High
Court Upholds Superintendent’s Dismissal
The State Supreme Court
has upheld the firing of a New Hampshire school superintendent.
The court ruled Thursday, May 26th, that Judith McGann was given a
fair hearing even without access to documents used by an expert
witness.
McGann’s attorneys argued the board that oversees
schools in Northwood, Nottingham and Strafford denied her a fair
chance to contest her firing when it did not share the files of a
forensic auditor who examined district finances. McGann had been
accused of financial mismanagement when she was fired in 2008.
Letter
Dear Northwood Residents Though my term on the Northwood School
Board ended in March, I feel compelled to address the recent NH
Supreme Court decision regarding termination of the former
Superintendent. In its decision, issued on May 26th, the Court ruled
in favor of the SAU Joint Board.
For residents who are unfamiliar
with the case, in the fall of 2008, the Joint Board (a 15 member
board comprised of the Northwood, Nottingham, and Strafford School
Boards) terminated the former superintendent after learning of
repeated unethical and illegal conduct.
Two of the
financial reasons for the termination were: the withholding of audit
information from the Northwood School Board (the Superintendent
withheld an audit management letter describing a major monetary
discrepancy between the school district treasurer’s records and the
school finance administrator’s records) and the misuse of state and
federal grant money (the forensic audit of SAU financial records
demonstrates that state and federal grant money belonging to the
schools was being given to SAU employees in large lump-sum bonuses
over the course of four years). All of the financial
information relating to the case is included in the forensic audit
and is available to the public.
After her termination, the
superintendent appealed the decision and the Joint Board held an
appeal hearing in the Northwood School gym. After many hours
of evidence and argument, the Joint Board upheld its original
decision to terminate. The Superintendent then appealed to the
State Board and, ultimately, to the NH Supreme Court. This case was
argued before the State Supreme Court in March and the Court issued
its decision on May 26th.
I would like to commend the Joint
Board for its unwavering commitment to the truth, and I would like
to thank Bill Tappan, former SAU Business Administrator, for his
unwavering integrity.
Sincerely, Colleen Pingree

A group of people, made homeless by Hurricane
Katrina, are being sheltered and fed by Bobo, owner of Bobo’s café.
In return, they are repairing her place. They are looking for a “new
start,” and Bobo, with her “be a bulldog” attitude, inspires them to
get up and go after their own dreams. They are all off-beat people,
befitting the colorful culture of New Orleans. The songs have the
jazzy rhythm and good-times feeling that is the spirit of New
Orleans.
