Major
Fundraiser Campaign For Northwood Libraries
The Friends of the
Northwood Libraries kicked off a major new fundraising campaign at
the recent Humor and Harmony event held at the Masonic Hall in
Northwood. The Friends wish to extend their sincere gratitude
to local artists who donated their time and talents on the Friends’
behalf: Cordwood, Becky Rule, and Sign Spectrum. You might say
it’s a sign of things to come!
Cordwood brought their tremendous
musical talent to provide toe-tapping tunes. Becky struck her
true notes with her sidesplitting and humorous stories of New
England life and together they announced the goal of raising the
funds to have a permanent sign created and placed outside the front
of the Chesley Memorial Library.
Sign Spectrum has donated their
well-known artistic skills to provide a detailed sketch of the
planned sign, which is on display at the Library. They have
also donated a limited number of signed prints of the Library.
These will be given to anyone donating $100 or more for the sign
campaign.
There are only 25, so stop in soon to pick up one for
your home. The same design has been placed on puzzles, which
were done by Piece Time Puzzles and are available for only
$20, and note cards, which are available for only $10 per pack.
Drop by the Library soon to see the sketch of the planned sign and
to pick up an image of the Library to take home. Join the
Friends for their next meeting at the Chesley Memorial Library on
Tuesday, June 21, at 6:30 p.m. New members welcome!

Cyanobacteria Lake Warning for Jenness Pond, Northwood
An elevated cyanobacteria cell concentration has been measured in
Jenness Pond, Northwood. Samples revealed that the state
standard of 50% or greater of the total cells from the bloom were
identified as cyanobacteria. As a result, the New Hampshire
Department of Environmental Services (DES) has issued a
cyanobacteria lake warning for those who recreate on Jenness Pond.
The current bloom is variable with some lake portions free of
elevated cell conditions while other areas have small blue-green
clouds in the water. Recent sightings report congregations of
the blue-green clouds within both First and Loon Cove. Please
continue to monitor your individual shoreline for changing
conditions
This warning is not based on a toxin evaluation and is
intended as a precautionary measure for short term exposure.
DES advises lake users to avoid contact with the water in areas
experiencing elevated cyanobacteria cell conditions typically where
lake water has a blue-green surface scum, clouds or flecks.
DES also advises pet owners to keep their pets out of any waters
that have these conditions.
DES routinely monitors public
beaches and public waters of the state for cyanobacteria. Once a
cyanobacteria lake warning has been issued, DES returns to affected
water bodies on a weekly basis until the cyanobacteria standards are
again met. Cyanobacteria are natural components of water
bodies worldwide, but blooms and surface scums may form when excess
phosphorus is available to the water. Some cyanobacteria
produce toxins that are stored within the cells but released upon
cell death. Toxins can cause both acute and chronic health
effects that range in severity. Acute health effects include
irritation of skin and mucous membranes, nausea, vomiting, and
diarrhea. Chronic effects include liver and central nervous
system damage.
The June 8, 2011 warning will remain in effect
until additional samples reveal cyanobacteria levels have
diminished.
