Northwood

Congregational Church Service of Hope

On Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 4:00 pm Northwood Congregational Church will hold a Service of Hope. All are welcome to participate in this service which will acknowledge that the Christmas holiday season can be a very difficult time for people who have experienced some type of loss or grief. This grief can come in many different forms – loss of a loved one, a beloved pet, a job, good health, and other well beings.

During the service we will recognize that we can move from a state of grief and despair to one of hope. God understands our grief, anger, frustration and God is there to guide us through our losses. His love for us is omnipresent and He will make all things new – this is the promise of the resurrection.

The service will include a welcome by NCC clergy, prayer, scripture readings or poems, silent reflections, candle lightings, benediction / blessing, and silent closing.

All members of the community are welcome to join for this important and timely service of hope.

Northwood Congregational Church is located at 881 First NH Turnpike (Route 4) in Northwood, NH just east of Coe Brown Northwood Academy.

The snow/inclement weather date is Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 7:00 pm.

Sandown Central School Presented With New Flag

Flown Over Washington D.C.

The students of the Sandown Central Elementary School participated in a special assembly on September 9, 2011. Jan Gilman, fourth grade teacher at the Sandown Central and Regent of the Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR invited Senator Barnes to present a new flag for the school’s outdoor flagpole to Principal Douglas Rolph. During the assembly, Mrs. Gilman gave a brief talk about the flag and the significance of its colors. After the assembly, the students created paper squares illustrating what the American flag, patriotism or heroes meant to them. A paper quilt made from all the squares is displayed in the school lunchroom.

Jean Lane, flag committee chair of the Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR, contacted Senator Jack Barnes earlier this summer to acquire a flag, which had been flown over the Capitol in Washington D.C. Senator Barnes’ office worked to acquire one. Senator Barnes personally delivered the flag along with two certificates to Sandown Central School and graciously participated in the assembly. Along with Student Council President, Kiara Phair, he led the students in the Pledge of Allegiance. Fifth grade students enjoyed seeing the Senator, whom they had met during a field trip to the State House last spring.

Letter To The Editor

So did you notice, pick through the offal to see that no one is concerned about the one fact that is the most important? Our kids are not getting educated. Don’t we care? Frankly, not even the special needs children receive a good education.

We spend more than any other country in the world in educating our children (except Luxemburg) and yet our students now rank very poor globally. It is so easy to just blame, lets say unions, a big easy target. There are many other culprits including parents, however, because of the loud voices of special interests , we are afraid to speak.

So, what have I said?

1. Special Education costs are robbing Regular Education students of an adequate education.

2. It is a self feeding/promoting growth industry.

3. It lives in and promotes secrecy.

4. We overspent by $528,000 and nobody wants to audit and examine why or how.

5. IEP’s are subjective.

6. Lack of foresight and good management is why.

7. In letter #1 I asked "how, without hurting special needs students and without copious amounts of new taxation that is just not there do we solve this dilemma". Talk, talk, talk.

I learned today that the "plan" that started this opus was mistakenly put forward and has been abandoned. I believe that I should and will leave it at that. Sorry.

It simply makes no difference to me whether you like me or not. It does matter a great deal to me that you view me as consistent. I feel that any big change, whether by the town or school, should go before the registered voters of this town for approval. If I believe in something enough, I will ask you up front to agree to it, I will not slip it between the sheets.
