Northwood Lake Watershed - Summer 2010
The
Northwood Lake Watershed Association has had a busy and productive
summer with renewed interest in protecting our lake.
1:
Starting with the Call to Action Meeting at Northwood Town Hall in
early June, the Watershed put the hard facts of what we are all
facing about milfoil to the membership. ie: since 1992 we have
treated the lake for milfoil and until recently we thought we had it
under control - we were wrong. Milfoil has been making steady gains
over the past few years, becoming denser in original areas and has
spread to new areas. Jim Vaillancourt, President of the NLWA,
explained at the meeting how milfoil adversely affects property
values, quality of life and how other communities have successfully
combated milfoil. We are treating the worst 41 acres. The state has
no money to help us this year, we are on our own. The meeting
brought about much need membership and funds, but more is needed.
2:
The lake was treated June 16 for milfoil using the chemical 2,4D.
Notices and warnings were posted around the treated areas about
swimming, drinking and irrigating with lake water. We worked closely
with the state for the necessary permits and with the loon
preservation committee on the safety of our loons throughout the
process.
3:
John Rockwell, Loon Man NH, was the guest speaker at the Annual
Meeting, July 17 at the Northwood Town Hall. Elections were also
held. Five new directors were elected from different associations
around the lake, which is great. More lake representation.
4:
Thanks to the hard work of Marie Damon, the July 31 Boat Parade was
a great success, It gave us a chance to have fun away from the
milfoil problems and brought residents together in a party mood.
5:
August 6 and 7 was Volunteer Weed Control Training on the lake.
Friday night was classroom instruction provided by Jody Connor,NH
Department of Environmental Services, and Master Diver, Ted Aldrige.
Saturday, the 7th, was open water training. 17 divers and tenders
attended the the class and open water training. Diving is another
important tool to help us control milfoil infestation.
6:
At the August 14 meeting, hosted by Camp Wah-Tut-Ca Boy Scout Camp,
next years activities and potential items were addressed. These
include membership growth, chemical and handpulling for milfoil,
Weed Watcher and Lake Host programs and working with local
governments. The Lake Host Program, monitoring incoming and outgoing
boats for exotic weeds, has been successful in spite of (the old
story) reduced funds. More volunteer hours are needed to make up the
loss. A Weed Watcher program has been started. Each Weed Watcher
will take a small section of shoreline to monitor for invasive
plants. Once found, the Dive Team will be informed and come and pull
them.
It
has been a busy and productive season. Visit us at

Another $50 Billion?
Obama is proposing another $50 Billion in
stimulus spending in addition to $700 Billion in TARP, $787 Billion
in The Stimulus Package and $26 Billion distributed to States to
save jobs of teachers, firemen, and police.
In the
Administrations campaign to pass the Stimulus Bill the American
People were told that
1)Unemployment would be held to a maximum
of 8.0%
2) We would be making a substantial investment in
infrastructure
3) And that there were many shovel-ready jobs
that would be provided
How accurate were these predictions?
Unemployment has hovered around 9.6% for many months. If we include
those who have stopped looking for work the true unemployment is
about 20%. Only about 4%of Stimulus funds have been spent on
infrastructure; and the shovel-ready jobs never materialized
If
we add up all these major spending packages and include the $50
Billion we have a total of $1.563 Trillion (or 1,563 Billion or
$1,563,000,000,000.) This money will be spent over a period of about
two years contrasted with the Iraqi/Afghan war costs of $709 Billion
over seven years. I mention the war costs only because many point to
them as the major cause of our present economic crisis.
An old
Chinese proverb quoted by many students of history states that,
Insanity is defined as doing the same thing in the same way and
expecting a different result.
