DAR Flag Ceremony At The Northwood Narrows Fire Station

From left: Captain Kevin Madison, Northwood Fire Chief George Ashford accepting certificate from DAR Vice Regent Barbara Frangione, Firefighter Scott Brown, and Firefighter Chris Brown.

The Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR, held its July meeting at the Nottingham Square Schoolhouse. Following a picnic lunch with a delicious strawberry dessert and berry punch provided by hosts Lynne Sweet, Deanna Rush and Norma Perkins, State and Chapter Chairman Lynne Sweet presented a program on the National Society’s Project Patriot Program. Mrs. Sweet explained how care packages, including helmet liners, cool ties, powders, wipes, candy, cards, etc. are sent to troops serving in Iraq, donated by   Chapter members. Her power point presentation showed the phone cards and supplies donated to chaplains at Landstuhl Military Hospital in Germany. Troops transported to this hospital arrive injured with only the clothes on their backs. The project Patriot Committee sees that these brave soldiers wake up to a phone card at their bedside table and that clothing will be available when they are out of bed.

A business meeting followed discussing plans for the reception for member Treasurer General Sarah Voll to be held at the Nottingham Square Schoolhouse on Sunday, August 15th from 2-4 p.m. and the chapter’s participation in Nottingham Day in September. Women interested in joining the DAR and being a part of the many projects involving Education, Patriotism and Historic Preservation sponsored by the Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR, are encouraged to visit our web site www.freewebs.com/elsecilley or join us at an upcoming meeting.

Boy Scout Camp To Host Watershed

Wah-Tut-Ca Boy Scout Camp will host the August meeting of the Northwood Lake Watershed Association on Saturday, August 14 at 9:30 a.m.

The Watershed will do a review of the past year and plan forward; including how many acres of 2,4D treatment do we apply for, applying for upstream water quality testing grant, applying for grants to help fund the milfoil treatment. Also to be discussed is how to increase donations from lake property owners and how to staff and fund the Lake Host program next year.

DIVE TEAM: The Watershed has its own dive team - both professionally paid and volunteers. Dive team training sessions were held August 6 and 7 under the direction of Brad Hall, Dive Coordinator. At the August 14 meeting we will explore the integration of the Dive Team and Weed Watchers program.

BOAT PARADE: July 31 was a perfect day for the Boat Parade. There were many enthusiastic participants and spectators ending with a Bar-B-Que and prizes at the Northwood Town Beach. Bob Holden and Scott Bryer, judges, handed out the following prizes:

1st Prize: “Wizard of Oz/No Place Like Home” - The Valencia and Geisler Families.

2nd Prize: “Hawaii” - The Damon Family

3rd Prize: “Margaritaville” - The Anderson Family

Be sure to attend the meeting at the Boy Scout Camp, August 14 at 9:30 a.m. See you there.

Summer Fun

“No Place Like Home”, on right, took home bragging rights for first prize at the annual boat parade. The Hawaii theme boat, left, which put everyone in the mood for a luau with tiki lights, captured second place.

The annual boat parade sponsored by the Northwood Lake Watershed Association, for many years a favorite celebration of summer at Northwood Lake, was held again on July 31, following a number of years of its absence. It was an enthusiastic and creative crowd who decorated boats of all varieties and toured the lake for everyone to enjoy. Participants competed for prizes and enjoyed a wonderful picnic at the town beach.

First prize went to Wizard of Oz/No Place Like Home, a theme remembering the 2008 tornado which unleashed destruction on the west end of Northwood Lake.

Northwood Highway Advisory Committee Has A Vacancy

Northwood Highway Advisory Committee is looking to fill a vacancy! Persons who live preferably on any of the town maintained roads, are the persons the committee would like to hear from. Some of the areas of Northwood that are not currently represented on the committee are East Northwood, Northwood Ridge and Northwood Center. The committee primarily works with the Road Agent and Selectmen and recommends the type of work that should be performed on the town roads.  The committee also works with the approved five year plan for town roads, making sure that the roads are kept in repair using the yearly schedule of work that is part of the plan.

Meetings are held on a monthly basis, currently at the Community Hall on Main Street, on the last Wednesday of each month.  Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and usually are 60 to 90  minutes long. Approved minutes of the committee’s meetings are available for review in the Town Hall lobby. Persons interested in becoming a member of the committee should send their letter of interest to the Board of Selectmen, 818 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood, NH 03261.
