Milfoil Questions And Answers
The
Northwood Lake Watershed Association held an “Emergency Call to
Action” meeting concerning milfoil June 12 at the Northwood Town
Hall. The meeting was well attended and many questions asked.
Following are questions and the answers provided by Watershed
President, Jim Vaillancourt.
Can
We Get Milfoil When The Lake Is Drawn Down? The freeze kills
Milfoil above the drawdown line. The law says that plants cannot be
removed from the bottom of the lake. We are working with the DES to
get an exemption. Milfoil is found beyond the drawdown line.
Drawdown is 6 feet and most of the Milfoil we are treating is in 6-
9 feet of water.
Does The Chemical 2,4D Work On Bladderwort?
No,
this is a different type of plant and is not affected.
What About The Loons And Loon Nests? We have been in contact
with the NH Loon Preservation Committee. A representative will be on
site during the treatment. If the Loons appear to be nervous and
when watched by the representative, that area will not be treated.
Does The Chemical Affect The Loons? There has been no evidence
of this to date.
Does 2,4D Have An Effect On The Fish In The Lake? No. There is
no evidence of this.
What Is The Weed Watcher Program? Weed Watchers are groups that
have been trained by the State and survey the lake to report exotic
aquatic plants. There will be training on the lake in JULY.
What Is The Plan For The Dive Team? In addition to the chemical
treatment this year, Andrea Tomlinson is organizing a Dive Team. The
Watershed will pay the $149 certification training fee for Divers.
We need Divers and Tenders. Tenders will help with the equipment and
taking the plants up. After two years we will have a dive team and
we hope to just do diving, but we cannot guarantee the results.
Other Than Milfoil - What Is The Health Of The Lake? Northwood
Lake is high in iron. Historically we have had EColi problems, but
not last year. Meadows Brook and Flat Meadows Brook has high EColi
and Phosphorous. The storm water runoff contributes to this. We have
acid rain and the lake is acidic and like most NH lakes has mercury
content. Large and Small Mouth Bass are doing well. The
membership was enthusiastic about keeping our lake water clean
through more volunteer and financial aid.

Timberwolves Take U19 Cup
Three Northwood girls joined their Timberwolves Soccer Club
teammates to win the U19 State Open Cup Championship and take home
the Fair Play award. The Timberwolves, out of Atkinson, NH, blanked
Nashua World Cup 5-0, rarely allowing them to cross into the
Timberwolves defensive half of the field.
Samantha MacCallum of
Northwood provided consistent mid-field control, moving the ball
forward and setting up plays throughout the game. Jackie Derocher
and Megan Hoover, both from Northwood, were part of a four-man
defense in front of keeper Molly Harrington. Hoover racked up two
assists from her sweeper position. The first was a long ball to Rory
Fawcett, who finished with some footwork in front of the goal. The
second was a set piece where Hoover placed the ball for Megan
Jowett’s header into the Nashua goal. Remaining goals were scored by
Felicia Amaral, Shannen Styrczula, and Lanie Jowett.
Hoover will
be attending Roger Williams University and Derocher will be
attending Norwich University, where they will continue their soccer
careers. MacCallum will return to Coe-Brown for her Junior Year.
