The Northwood PTA is hosting a pancake breakfast on Saturday, February 20th from 8-10a.m. The breakfast will take place at Applebee’s in Concord on Loudon Road. This event is to raise money for the third grade teacher, Mrs. Patterson, who was involved in a head on crash on Rt 4 in Northwood about a month ago.

All proceeds will go to her and her family. Tickets are $5 each and must be pre-purchased. If you would like to purchase tickets or need more information, please call Stephanie Ireland at 942-8942 or the Northwood Elementary School at 942-5488.

Colby-Sawyer College has named Charles Kenneth Moak of  Northwood, NH, to the Dean’s List for academic achievement during the 2009 fall semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours in graded courses. Moak, a member of the class of 2012, is a Communication Studies major.

Spaghetti Dinner

The eighth grade class at Northwood School will be holding a spaghetti dinner on Tuesday, February 16 from 5-7 pm at the school cafeteria. The public is welcome to attend and support the students in this fundraiser.  There will be a full menu including dessert; prices are reasonable so you can treat the cook in the house to a night off, and everyone else to a great meal.

A Benefit Dance for Jim Ring and his family will be held February 13th at Lake Shore Farm, 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Donations at the door. Live music.

Beginning in March 2010, the Northwood Food Pantry located at the Northwood Town Hall will be establishing pantry hours.

This is a new concept and we hope that all persons will adhere to the following hours and help to allow the pantry to serve all those in a more efficient manner. All are asked to come once a month during one of the following times:

The First Saturday of Every Month from 10:00-11:30 a.m.
The Second Monday of Every Month from 3:00-4:30 p.m.
The Last Friday of Every Month from 10-00-11:30 a.m.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this transition.

Chesley Memorial Library

The Chesley Memorial Library is pleased to announce that during March 2010 we will be part of The Big Read: New Hampshire Reads To Kill A Mockingbird. This is a statewide project of the Center for the Book at the NH State Library which will include hundreds of “Big Read” events throughout the state.

The Chesley Memorial Library and the Blaisdell Memorial Library will hold a joint Southern Comfort potluck supper and book discussion at the Masonic Hall in Northwood on Saturday, March 27, at 6:00 p.m.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) that gives communities the opportunity to come together and read, discuss and celebrate one of 30 selections from U.S. and world literature. In New Hampshire, the program is organized by the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library, which received a grant to coordinate the statewide effort. The Center for the Book chose to focus on To Kill A Mockingbird because of its relevant themes of standing up for what is right, relationships between the races, courage, justice and more.

The Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library is one of 268 nonprofits nationwide - including libraries, municipalities and arts, culture and science organizations - to receive a grant to host a Big Read project in this grant round. In 2007, its program “The Big Read: New Hampshire Reads Fahrenheit 451” was only one of two statewide Big Read programs focusing on a single book.

For more information about The Big Read: New Hampshire Reads To Kill A Mockingbird, visit www.BigReadNH.org.

The Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library was established in 2003 to celebrate and promote reading, books, literacy and the literary heritage of New Hampshire, and to highlight the role that reading and libraries play in enriching the lives of the people of the Granite State. It is an affiliate of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress.

The NEA, which designed The Big Read as a way to restore reading to the center of American culture, presents the program in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Support for the Big Read is provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Transportation for The Big Read is provided by Ford.

Meet The Candidates In Northwood

The Annual Candidates Night will be hosted by the Northwood Historical Society Wednesday, February 25th, or snow date, Thursday, February 26th, in the Coe-Brown Multi-purpose room at 7:00 p.m.

It is an excellent opportunity to meet the candidates who are running for all the open town positions. There are some very important positions being filled this year. Come and be part of local government and let your opinion be heard. The candidates will each speak for 3 minutes then there will be time for questions from the audience. After everyone is done, there will be time to personally meet each candidate and light refreshments will be served.

There will be a sample ballot and the Town Report is often available. There will be someone to read the warrants for both the Town and School District.
