New Hampshire Lakes Association Thanks NLWA

The New Hampshire Lakes Association thanked the Northwood Lake Watershed Association Lake Host Program in the following communication.

“Volunteers from your lake participated in the Lake Host Program this year. The Lake Host Program is funded through the DES and Federal grants. The program was developed in 2002 by NH LAKES and NHDES to educate and prevent boaters from spreading exotic aquatic plants to lakes and ponds in New Hampshire. Since then, the number of participating lakes and ponds and volunteers has doubled, the number o boats inspected has tripled, and the number of “saves” (exotic plants discovered) has increased from four in 2002 to a total of 224 in 2008.

The program is invaluable in educating boaters and protecting NH’s waterbodies from aquatic plant infestations, thereby preventing recreational hazards, property value decline, aquatic ecosystem decline, aesthetic issues, and saving costly remediation efforts. Lake Host staff made three “saves” at your lake and discovered the following aquatic vegetation entering or leaving your lake in 2008.

Variable milfoil (exotic)
Bladderwort (native)

Great work! We encourage volunteers to continue participating in the Lake Host Program to protect the future of your lake.”

Books For Books

Submitted By Melissa Moore
Library Media Specialist
The Got Books? Donation book bin has been moved to the parking lot of Northwood Diner. All proceeds earned from this fundraising program are used to purchase new books for the Northwood School Library.

People are encouraged to place their used books into the bin. When the bin is full, we call the Got Books? Company and they come to empty it out. The books are sorted and recycled through a variety of outlets. Some are donated to military families, other books are placed with charitable organizations, and some are sold at two used books stores managed by the Got Books? Program. The Northwood School Library is paid by the pound for all the books recycled in the program. We have been receiving a check a month and it has helped us keep new books on the shelves.

When Mrs. Oxnard’s grade 8 students visited the library recently, I was thrilled to be able to show them many new titles that are current bestsellers. This program helped us buy the 2009 Newbery Medal winner, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, as well many others.

Materials acceptable for the book bin include adult hardcovers and paperbacks, children’s books, audio books, videos, and DVD’s. Encyclopedias, magazines, and catalogs are not accepted.

So in the next few months, when you’re finished with a book, please think about donating it for further use. Your help is appreciated. I would like to express my appreciation to the owner of Northwood Diner, Mr. Bob Clark for being willing to host the book bin at the Northwood Diner.

Harvey Lake Women’s Club Promotes Awareness Of Domestic Violence

If you were traveling along Rts. 4, 202 or 43 last week and saw purple t-shirts hanging from a clothesline at the municipal parking lot and wondered why, the answer is awareness. A group of ladies from the Harvey Lake Womens Club hung the three shirts, each with one word, to bring awareness to the problem of domestic violence. Domestic violence awareness was selected as the signature project of the General Federation of Women’s Club International at their conference in Chicago in 2008.  The t-shirts with their single words are the visual reminder that harm to women within their homes or families must end. In a concerted effort with GFWC, the Harvey Lake Club is promoting awareness and participating in fundraising for needed expansion of shelters and counseling programs. To date, over 16 million dollars has been raised through this project. Members of the Harvey Lake Women’s Club who participated at the site to hang the shirts were: Ann Kelley, Charlotte Klaubert, Elaine Covey, Lucy Silva, Marie Bapple, Ginny Rogers and Joann Bailey.

Obituaries

MaryAnn (McLean) Hanrahan

Northwood - MaryAnn (McLean) Hanrahan, 53, passed away on June 5, 2009.

She was born in Medford, Mass., on March 4, 1956, to the late Frank McLean and Dorothea Leonard McLean. She was a graduate of Malden Catholic Girls High School and a graduate of Bunker Hill Community College.

In 1982, she met Ed Hanrahan and in 1985, they married. Together, they built a dome home in Newmarket where they welcomed their daughters into the world. She excelled in her role as a wife and mother. She was fiercely devoted to her family and friends and worked diligently at instilling honesty, faith, compassion, independence, and the pursuit of higher education in her children. She was known for saying "NEVER, EVER, hurt a child, an animal, or an old person." - a motto she lived by her entire life.

She was fond of saying, "If you're not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. If you are part of the problem, then just go away." She was a problem solver, and never afraid to jump in to make things right.

In 1997, the family moved to Northwood where they became parishioners of St. Joseph's Church. A devout Catholic, she became an active member in the church and school.

MaryAnn had a sense of humor that sustained her through some difficult times and by which people recognized her. Her laughter and wit will live on in the hearts and minds of those she has left behind.

She is survived by her husband, Ed; daughters, Kate and Sara Hanrahan, and Lianon Close; siblings, Julia O'Brien, Denise Egan and Frankie, Malcolm and Lenny McLean; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and countless close friends, especially Mimi and Rich Desharnais. Everyone shares in the loss of this unique and wonderful woman.

MaryAnn has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the care of Kate and Sara Hanrahan, 154 Mountain Ave., Northwood 03261, to be used for their college education.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009,  at St. Joseph Catholic Church, N.H. Turnpike, Route 4, Northwood.

To sign our online guestbook, go to www.purdyfuneralservice.com.
