News from Northwood School

The past couple of weeks have been busy!  Many thanks to the VFW for offering the “Missing Children” program! We hope to run this again in the spring. The PTA and the Northwood School Aspirations team worked together to offer the parent information session of the 8 Conditions for Student Aspirations. Parents who attended learned about the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations and the different things Northwood School has been doing to support the eight conditions for student aspirations.  The team then asked parents for ideas to work with families and students to continue this work.  The evening was fun and full of great ideas!  If you would like to see the short presentation it is on the PTA link on the school web site.

The Artist in Residence has announced that local photographer Tim Gaudreau will be conduction photography workshops with Northwood’s 7th graders for this year’s Artist in Residence program. Fro many years now, Tim has been working with students in schools all over the country bringing his talents, mentoring, and enthusiasm to similar programs. The students will meet in groups a total of three times with the artist and will learn the art of portraiture. The program will run Nov. 5th through the 14th. The portraits will be displayed in the school upon completion.

A special thank you to Corporal Lister of the Northwood Police Department for visiting with students in grades K-2 to talk about safety during Halloween.  You taught us valuable lessons that we can use all year long!

Northwood Historical Society Potluck Dinner

The Northwood Historical Society will hold its annual potluck supper on November 18, 2008, in the Community Hall on the corner on Main Street and School Street in the Narrows in Northwood. This will be the first of the hall in many years. The supper starts at 6:00 p.m. Please bring an entrée or salad and your place setting. Drinks and dessert will be provided. Free for all.

This year we will have George Shattuck at 7:00 p.m. to review any old post cards you may have. He will discuss what traits to look for of original post cards. Please bring any cards you have. The society will be bringing its collection for him to critique. Come have fun.

Northwood  Area Businesses Sponsor 3rd Annual Shop Hop
(Group has formed to enhance small business growth in Northwood)

Northwood area merchants have come together to provide the community with a fun filled holiday weekend to start the Christmas shopping season.  The third annual event, held on Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 28th, 29th, and 30th), has grown to include many  specialty shops, galleries, working studios, and restaurants.  The shop hop is designed to educate the public about the variety of locally produced art, craft, and gift items available in the Northwood area and to encourage the community to “shop locally.” Plans for the weekend include pottery demonstrations, a tea hosted by Pied Cow Gifts LLC at Chadbourn’s Restaurant, homemade treats at various locations, holiday music and more. When asked about last year’s event many of the merchants said that folks came into their shops having driven by for years but had never ventured into their store. Not only promoting local businesses, the shop hop promotes stress free shopping, saving gas, and Yankee thrift as discounts will be offered with the coupon book found at each locale.   Many people bring their Thanksgiving guests, friends and family for a wonderful day shopping.  Map and voucher books are available at the following listed businesses:  Sassafras Tree, TBerries, Chadbourn’s Restaurant LLC & Pied Cow Gifts LLC, Portable Pantry, Countryberries, Parker-French West and Parker French Antique Centers. Checkerberries Quilt Shop, The Eclectic Florist LLC, Gallery 4, Jeff Brown Pottery, etc. etc.

Each shop will be drawing for a $25 gift certificate on Sunday the 30th to be given to one lucky recipient that has been in their shop.  Everyone’s chances increase to be the grand prize winner for a lovely gift basket (on display at Chadbourn’s) with items contributed from all the merchants.  The Grand Prize drawing will be held on December 5th.  People may do all the shops in 1 day or take 3 to leisurely enjoy each shop’s ambiance and enjoy their bargains.   For a full list of participating merchants visit: www.jeffbrownpottery/shophop.html.  For more information call 603-303-5635 and look for the upcoming article in “NH to Do Guide.”
