News
from the Northwood School Board
The Northwood School Board held a work session before their regular
November 17 Board Meeting to establish a set of district goals. Dr.
Michael Ludwell, Interim Superintendent, and Allan Demko, Interim
Business Administrator, worked with the board to establish 10 goals
that will be presented in rough draft at the next meeting.
After the work session, Principal Asbell spoke to the Board about
the Leadership Team’s recent survey of students and staff with
regard to stress. In the survey, students and staff expressed a
feeling of being “rushed” through the day. In response to this
report, the team will be implementing some small changes that should
have a big impact. These changes include a change in the bell
schedule, a change in locker assignments, and a new “passing time””
procedure.
Ms. Asbell also updated the Board on a number of other issues,
including Artists in Residence and the My Voice Survey. In this
year’s Artist in Residence program, 7th grade students have been
learning portrait photography with photographer Tim Gaudreau. Final
portraits will be on display in school upon completion. The My Voice
Survey was given to all students in grades 3-8 and to all staff
members. The results are expected back in December at which time,
the Aspirations Team will reviews the data and create an action plan
based on the results.
After Ms. Asbell’s report, the Board addressed a number of issues
including continued discussion on the Student Activity Fund, the
Special Education Budget, staff health insurance, teacher
negotiations, and last year’s ball field repair warrant article.
The Board
also voted to hire Karen Taylor as the district’s new Finance
Administrator. Ms. Taylor has been the Director of Finance at
Southern Maine University and was selected from a pool of
approximately 20 applicants. Ms. Taylor’s will begin work on
December 1—the Board is looking forward to working with her.
The Board also noted that Ms. McGann’s appeal hearing will continue
on December 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the Northwood School gym. As a result,
the Northwood Board’s next meeting will be held on December 15. This
meeting will begin with a budget work session from 5-8:00 p.m.
followed by a regular board meeting. The budget work session will
continue on December 16 at 5:00.p.m. if necessary.
And finally, all Board Members would like to congratulate the Girl’s
Soccer Team on winning the league championship! We would also like
to congratulate the Boy’s Soccer Team for its winning record and the
Boy’s & Girls’ Cross Country Team for a great effort!
Please contact Colleen Pingree, Chair with questions or concerns ([email protected];
942-5249).

Volleyball Setter Makes School History
Katie
Veno, a new member of the 1,000-assist club at PCA, joined by coach,
and father Rick Veno. The Veno family lives in Northwood, NH.
Katie Veno, a senior volleyball standout at Portsmouth Christian
Academy and Northwood, NH native, made school history this season as
she became the first player to record 1,000 assists. She set the
record on October 22, 2008 as the PCA Eagles challenged the Campbell
Cougars of Litchfield, NH in Division III play.
While Katie shared the setting duties with a teammate in previous
years, Coach Rick Veno decided to give her full reign this year
likening the setter position to that of a quarterback on a football
team.
“Katie decides what plays to call and who gets the set every time
she touches the ball,” he says. “She has great decision-making
skills and is always confident in her teammates’ ability to put the
ball down for a kill.” Veno is not only a proud coach but Katie’s
proud father as well.
Katie finished up her high school career with 1,002 assists tallying
486 in her senior year alone. She would like to continue playing
volleyball in college and plans to attend an East Coast Christian
college.

Students “Mix-It-Up”
Students and faculty members enjoy “Mixing-it-Up” at
lunch.
The Coe-Brown chapter of Operation Kindness recently celebrated
Mix-it-Up at Lunch Day, a national initiative sponsored by the
Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance Program. On
November 13, at all three lunch periods students were asked to move
out of their comfort zones and meet someone new. The tables were
decorated with centerpieces with the month of the year. Students
were asked to sit with other students who celebrate the same birth
month. Students who participated were entered into drawings for
gift certificates and four lucky students who had birthdays that
week were surprised with gift bags. Operation Kindness members, who
promote acts of kindness throughout the year, also celebrated World
Kindness Week from November 10th to the 14th, by reading kindness
quotes as part of morning announcements and by celebrating World
Kindness Day, November 14, by providing students and staff with an
ice cream social at the end of the school day.
Operation Kindness strives to support the Kindness Movement, an
international movement dedicated to making the world a kinder
place. The goal is to demonstrate the power of simple human
kindness by promoting the practice of kind acts on a regular basis.
The Northwood Girl Scouts, through the efforts of the whole
community, made a large donation of personal hygiene items, canned
goods and other non-perishable items to the Northwood Food Pantry.
The girls worked hard to involve their community in this endeavor.
They put donation boxes throughout their school and collected items
from neighbors. The Troops also manned the voting booths on Election
Day, encouraging and supporting their community members while
voting. Many Scouts spent Veteran’s Day, their day off from school,
helping to stock the shelves of the Northwood Food Pantry.
Northwood Recreation Thank You
The 3rd Annual Haunted Hayride was held on November 1st and was a
ghouling success. It was enjoyed by children of all ages, as well as
adults. The night was chilling with thrills of scary sights and
freaky noises. This year’s event would not have been possible
without the help of our volunteers and the generous donations from
local businesses. The success of the Haunted Hayride is a result of
participation from the Girl Scouts, PTA, Recreation Commission
Members, all the scary faces that were hiding in the woods, and
those behind the scenes. Northwood Recreation would like to thank
you for your dedication.
Most of all, thank you to Camp Yavneh for allowing us to utilize the
facility and to Downing Quality Homes for donating the use of the
tractor. We are already planning for next year’s event; guaranteed
to be a TREAT!
