Olive A. Edmunds was presented the Boston Post Cane by
Selectmen for being the oldest Chichester resident at the age of
101. She came to Chichester in 1938 as the bride of E. Scott
Edmunds living in the home they built on Main Street. During World
War II she was one of the many local women who corresponded with
Chichester “boys” who were serving in the military. In the late
1940’s she was instrumental in organizing a hot lunch program for
the four one room school houses in town. She was chairman of the
school board when Chichester Central School was built and opened in
1949. She also served on the town’s Planning Board, Trustee of the
Trust Funds, and was active in the Ladies Benevolent Society of the
Congregational Church and a member of the Chichester Grange for over
70 years. After her retirement from teaching she volunteered at the
Central School’s library when she wasn’t traveling around the
country with Scott in their camper. She is the mother of two
daughters, Linda and Eileen.
