Bob “Steamer” Stanley to Speak At Grand Opening
Of Pittsfield Youth Athletic Park
Retired Red Sox pitcher Bob “Steamer” Stanley will be the
featured speaker at the Grand Opening Ceremony and Dedication of the
Quintin B. Berkson Memorial Field at the Pittsfield Youth Athletic
Park, Saturday, July 23, at 3 pm at the fields on Tilton Hill Road.
Known for his sinker balls, Stanley was a member of the Red Sox
team from 1977-89, and the team’s all-time saves leader until
Jonathan Papelbon took the record in 2009. He was a key player
for the Red Sox team that lost to the Mets in the 1986 World Series.
During his baseball years, he earned a 115-97 career record with 693
strikeouts and a 3.64 ERA.
The Ceremony will follow Pittsfield’s Old Home Day parade
scheduled for 1 pm. The program will include an invocation,
introduction of dignitaries and members of the Pittsfield Youth
Baseball Association Board of Directors, recognition of sponsor
plaques and major contributors, dedication of the new
regulation-size baseball field, ceremonial pitches, and an
abbreviated baseball game.
The community-wide event is the culmination of the past four
years of work under the leadership of Larry Berkson, a team of
advisors and the PYBA Board. Numerous people donated their
time, equipment and expertise to the project, and hundreds of
businesses and individuals contributed funds to make the renovation
and enlargement of the Park a reality. The new field is being
dedicated to Quint Berkson who passed away in 2006. Quint
played t-ball through high school baseball, and was named MVP and
earned the Joe Richard Sportsmanship Award in 1996. His love
of baseball was boundless.
Field #1 was previously dedicated to Lt. John Dunne, Jr., who
played baseball with PYBA from minor league to high school. He
was killed in Japan while serving with the U.S. Navy in 1994.
