Gilmanton Memorial Day Observance

American
Legion and Auxiliary President Raelyn Cottrell, Gilmanton, NH
The
town of Gilmanton will once again celebrate Memorial Day on Sunday,
May 27th. Ceremonies will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a service in the
church on the grounds of historical Smith Meeting House,
Meetinghouse Road in Gilmanton. Immediately thereafter, there
will be flag raising and commemorative ceremonies led by the
American Legion, Ellis-Geddes-Levitt Post 102. Please join us
in honoring and remembering the military men and women who served in
the armed forces.
Each
year the American Legion Auxiliary, Ellis-Geddes-Levitt, Unit 102
sponsors an essay contest for seventh grade students at the
Gilmanton School. The topic is “The Meaning of Memorial Day”.
The winner will read their essay at the ceremonies.
The
Gilmanton School Band will also provide the music and at the
conclusion of the ceremonies a light luncheon will be offered in the
school house courtesy of the American Legion Auxiliary.
The red
poppy worn at Memorial Day is an internationally recognized symbol
of Remembrance of those who have died at war. Members of the
American Legion Auxiliary, Ellis-Geddes-Levitt Unit 102 will be
offering poppies for a donation. Monies received as a result
of the sale of poppies are earmarked for the purpose of helping a
veteran, military person or family.
On
behalf of the American Legion, Ellis-Geddes-Levitt Post 102 and the
American Legion Auxiliary, Ellis-Geddes-Levitt Unit 102 of
Gilmanton, we hope you will be able to attend and look forward to
seeing you there.
New England Quilts And The Stories They Tell
Join
the Gilmanton Historical Society for a program on New England Quilts
on Tuesday evening, May 29, at the Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron
Works.
Quilts
tell stories and New England quilts are full of heart warming tales
of service and tradition. Pam Weeks weaves world history, women’s
history, industrial history and wonderful stories into her
presentation. Participants are invited to bring a quilt for
identification and to share.
Social
hour and refreshments begin at 7 pm and the program begins promptly
at 7:30. The Society’s museum, in the basement of Old Town
Hall, will be open at 7 pm.
This is
the first program of the Society’s 2018 summer series. On June
26 Pat Clarke will reveal the history of Gilmanton’s First 100
Years. John Dickey will lead a walking tour of Beech Grove
Cemetery in Gilmanton Corners beginning at 6 pm on July 24th.
On August 28th John Dickey offers a program of Gilmanton post cards.
The final program, on September 25th, brings Steve Blunt performing
as John Hutchinson with Songs and Stories of the Hutchinson Family
Singers.
The
Society’s Museum in Old Town Hall is open every 2nd and 4th Saturday
morning, 10 am to noon, September through May.
The
programs are free and open to the public. Donations to support
the work of the Society are always welcome.
