First meeting for “Purple Caps”, a knitting project for Shaken Baby

Why It Matters
A Place For Teens At Gilmanton Year-Round Library
It has been said it takes a community to raise a child. That
statement couldn’t be truer than when it comes to raising our young
adults. Offering them a positive, safe environment is key to helping
them stay successful and on track. That’s why the Gilmanton
Year-Round Library matters - it provides our local youth with a
community center.
The building is open to teens as an option after school.
Instead of heading home to an empty house, they can come to the
library and receive homework help, jump online, meet up with their
friends - all in a monitored environment.
The
staff offers them a night out at the library each month that lets
them use the library in a way geared towards their age and
interests. This lets our young people know the Gilmanton Year- Round
Library is their library too. With that idea planted in their brain,
they begin to see this town as theirs as well. They learn to have a
sense of pride in their community and respect for it. These two
elements help create teens that don’t engage in things such as
vandalism, drug use, under-age drinking or other unsafe activities.
This is a goal of the GYRL, to help our community by giving our
teens a way to make good choices and safe decisions. We do this by
offering a place to do just that - right inside the doors of The
Gilmanton Year-Round Library.
