Living With Coyotes At Gilmanton Library Barn

Gilmanton coyote2.jpg

Living with Coyotes is the subject of a presentation by Chris Shadler of Project Coyote on Tuesday, December 11, 6 pm at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library.

As people become more aware of coyotes in their neighborhoods, it is important to learn more about them. On December 11, at 6 pm, the Gilmanton Year-Round Library will host a presentation by Chris Shadler of Project Coyote.  All are welcome and there is no charge.

Chris Shadler is a wild canid biologist who works with Project Coyote. The organization promotes educated coexistence between people and coyotes by championing progressive management policies that reduce human-coyote conflict, supporting innovative scientific research, and fostering respect for and understanding of America’s native wild “song dog.”

Chris’ interest in wild canids began in 1980 as a volunteer at the Wolf Park in Battleground, Indiana under Dr. Erich Klinghammer. This opportunity and others inspired an eventual Masters in Conservation Biology at Antioch University Graduate School. Her thesis focused on the biological and social perspectives of natural recovery for the Eastern Timber Wolf in Michigan.

Beginning in the early 1990s, Chris taught Conservation Issues and Wolf Ecology at the University of New Hampshire, receiving many teaching excellence and student recognition awards. She continues to instruct and mentor adult degree candidates in the UNH System at Granite State College.

While wolf recovery was the focus of her early work, Chris’ attention shifted to the eastern coyote when she moved to New England. She chose a farm with known coyote problems to raise sheep and train her border collies. Using sound livestock management and common sense, she has avoided any predation for nearly two decades. A peaceful co-existence between coyote and livestock has grown an attentive audience for humane management.

Gilmanton Cookie_judges_2011.jpg

Cookie contest judges Steve Owens, Brady Hayes and Stan Bean enjoyed their job at the 2011 Gilmanton Year-Round Library Cookie Contest.     This year’s contest will be held Saturday, December 15, 2:30 to 4:00 pm.

Saturday, December 15,  is the day to stock up on holiday cookies at the Gilmanton Year Round Library.  Come to the library from 2:30 pm until 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon and bring your children for a fun-filled afternoon.  Children’s librarian Pam Jansury will offer creative activities, and Christmas music will accompany the event.

If you are a cookie maker, join the competition!  Donate your favorites, along with the recipe, and let the judges decide who will be Gilmanton’s Cookie Master! Bring three dozen cookies to the Library on Friday afternoon, December 14, between 4 and 7 pm. Volunteers will package them up, along with holiday gift baskets for sale.

Along with cookies for sale ($4 a dozen), gift baskets will be offered.

“Gilmanton’s Greatest Views…” Campaign Pursues Final $40,000

The campaign to preserve “Gilmanton’s Greatest Views - For Everyone, Forever” is down to the final push. The Board of Directors of the Gilmanton Land Trust announced that only $40,000 remains to be raised to complete this ambitious, $1.17 million project by the end of 2012. The project, begun two years ago, will protect and ensure the good stewardship of four iconic conservation properties in Gilmanton owned by George Twigg, III.

These lands include famous views from Frisky Hill, extensive frontage on unspoiled Meetinghouse Pond, highly productive farmlands, and an historic site used two centuries ago for processing (“retting”) flax into linen and found no where else in New Hampshire. Key partners include the Five Rivers Conservation Trust, and the Gilmanton Conservation Commission.

For more information on the project, including donation options, see www.gilmantonlandtrust.org, and/or contact project manager Tom Howe ([email protected], 603-364-6131).

Tom Howe commented: “We’re grateful to have received such strong support from 185 households, businesses, foundations, and public funding programs so far. It’s a testament to the sense of community that our supporters feel about this project, and why we’ve done so well.  We’re excited about completing our fundraising over the coming month. With help from others, we’ll meet a challenge gift of $7,000 from two couples, and reach our goal by deadline!  This will give us the resources we need to complete the necessary real estate transactions early in the new year.”
