Gilmanton Historical Society Brings Back “Your Hit Parade”
Do you
remember the Hit Parade shows back in the “olden days”? Or do you wonder what kind of music your parents (or grandparents)
loved to listen to? The Gilmanton Historical Society
presents “Twenty Five Years of America’s Top Hits” at its final
summer program on Tuesday evening, September 27th, at the Old Town
Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works.
“Your Hit Parade” aired on radio,
and then on television, from 1935 until 1959. It set the
standard for American popular music. Calvin Knickerbocker will outline a quarter century of the show’s history
as a tastemaker, featuring songs inspired by the Great Depression,
World War II, and on through the advent of rock and roll.
This is
the final program in the Society’s 2011 summer series. Refreshments and social hour begins at 7 pm and the program starts
promptly at 7:30. The public is welcome. There is
no charge but donations are appreciated.
The program will be
preceded by a brief annual meeting. If you are interested in
working with the Historical Society, as a board member or volunteer,
contact President John Dickey at 267-6098.
The Gilmanton
Historical Society offers a number of publications on the history of
the Town. They are available at all Society programs, at the
Town Clerk’s Office, and at the Brick House in Gilmanton Corners.
The Society’s Museum, in the Academy Building, is open by
appointment. Call curator Jeanine Moorhead 267-8870. Thanks to
George Carpenter for his work as assistant curator of the Historical
Society’s museum. Pat Clarke will be taking George’s spot as
curator. For more information about the Historical Society and
the summer series, pick up a copy of the flier at the Academy or
call President John Dickey at 267-6098.
