Lower Gilmanton Church Annual Work Bee

The Lower Gilmanton Church is having their Annual Work Bee on Saturday, June 25, 2011, starting at 9:00 am.  General outside work are the projects being considered – replace and paint weather worn boards and fence posts, replace front side of carriage shed roof with a metal roof.  If you would like to help maintain this special landmark, which is on the National Historic Register, you are more than welcome to help out.

For more information call Bob Potter Jr. at 435-8738.  Bring tools you think you might need to work up an appetite.  Many hands make light work.  Please bring a dish to share at lunch time.

Our Annual Meeting will be reconvened during the day to discuss any issues needing to be considered such as the summer Church services’ schedule. In case of rain, come on Sunday, June 26, 2011, with the same agenda in mind.

Gilford High Students Volunteer At GYRL

THANK YOU SO MUCH to Connor, Rachel, Megan, Cameron, Shannon, Parker,

Clayton and Mariah, our Gilford High School Volunteers.  The Library looks terrific!!

On June 3rd, a team of Gilford High School Juniors and Seniors (many from Gilmanton) volunteered 4 hours of community service to the Gilmanton Year-Round Library.  The students washed dozens of small paned windows, edged, weeded and mulched the gardens and trees and painted the ‘Open’ sign flag post.

At 10:30 they stopped for a snack and enjoyed Sue Barr’s fabulous giant chocolate chip cookies.  During snack time, the Gilmanton/Gilford students reminisced about their younger school days at the Gilmanton Elementary School across the street from the Library.  Then it was back to work!  After the work was done around 12:30 the group enjoyed pizza from the Gilmanton Iron Works store provided by the Bedard and Barr families

State Of The Loon – “The Natural History, Challenges,

And Successes Of Loons In New Hampshire”

Have you ever wondered why a loon’s eyes are red?  Why loon chicks ride on their parents’ backs?  What loons are saying with those eerie calls in the night?

Join biologist Harry Vogel on Saturday, June 25, 4:30pm, at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library, as he talks about this unique symbol of New Hampshire’s wild lakes and its special place in the hearts of New Hampshire residents.  Harry will talk about loons, where loons fit in with other birds (you might be surprised!), challenges facing loons, and the Loon Preservation Committee’s work to safeguard New Hampshire’s threatened loon population.

Harry Vogel is the director of the Loon Preservation Committee in New Hampshire. The mission of the LPC is to restore and maintain a healthy population of loons throughout New Hampshire; to monitor the health and productivity of loon populations as sentinels of environmental quality; and to promote a greater understanding of loons and the natural world.  LPC’s success in protecting New Hampshire’s loon population has been attributed in large part to the monitoring, research, management and educational activities of LPC staff, members, and volunteers.

For further details call 267 – 6672.  Refreshments will be served.
