State of The Loon - “The Natural History, Challenges, and Successes
of Loons In New Hampshire”
Saturday, July 24, 4:30 p.m, Shellcamp Club House, Gilmanton, NH
Have you ever wondered why a loon’s eyes are red? Why loon chicks ride
on their parents’ backs? What loons are saying with those eerie calls in the
night? Join biologist Harry Vogel as he talks about this unique symbol of
New Hampshire’s wild lakes and its special place in the hearts of New
Hampshire residents. Harry will talk about loons, where loons fit in with
other birds (you might be surprised!), challenges facing loons, and the Loon
Preservation Committee’s work to safeguard New Hampshire’s threatened loon
population.
Harry Vogel is the director of the Loon Preservation Committee in New
Hampshire. The mission of the LPC is to restore and maintain a healthy
population of loons throughout New Hampshire; to monitor the health and
productivity of loon populations as sentinels of environmental quality; and
to promote a greater understanding of loons and the natural world. LPC’s
success in protecting New Hampshire’s loon population has been attributed in
large part to the monitoring, research, management and educational
activities of LPC staff, members, and volunteers.

Gilmanton Fire Dept.
On July 7, 2010, at 1:10 a.m., the Gilmanton Fire
Department was toned to a reported structure fire at the Hampton Residence
on 334 Route 140 in Gilmanton.
Upon arrival, it was found that fire had
consumed two outside walls and the fire was quickly extinguished.
There
was approximately $2,000.00 worth of damage and the cause of the fire was
determined to be a smoldering cigarette.
Belmont Fire Department assisted
at the scene.
On July 7, 2010, at 2:37 p.m., the Gilmanton Fire
Department was toned to a reported structure fire at the Farrell Residence
on 140 Hatch Road in Gilmanton.
Because of the high heat, humidity and
the type of report, a second alarm was quickly requested. Upon
arrival, it was reported that a 40x50 barn was fully involved and starting
to collapse and spot brush fires were starting around the structure.
Several firefighters suffered from heat related injuries and two were
transported by ambulance to Concord Hospital.
More ambulances and fire
apparatus were requested to the scene for a total of 4 alarms.
The
building was a total loss and the cause of the fire is undetermined.
All
units cleared the scene at 5:30 p.m.
The following departments assisted
the Gilmanton Fire Department and responded as mutual aid:
Alton Fire
Department, Belmont Fire Department, Barnstead Fire Rescue, Laconia Fire
Department, Loudon Fire Department, Pittsfield Fire Department, Chichester
Fire Department, New Durham Fire Department, Farmington Fire Department,
Meredith Fire Department, Gilford Fire Department, Strafford Fire
Department, Tilton/Northfield Fire Department, Franklin Fire Department,
Sanbornton Fire Department and the Canterbury Fire Department.
We would
like to remind people of the high heat and humidity and to be careful about
burning outside. The Gilmanton Fire Department is reducing the open burn
permits in town, from 3 days to 1 day until the hot weather breaks.
We
would also like to remind people to watch children and the elderly,
reminding them to stay hydrated by drinking water and watching them and
others for signs of heat stress.
