The Gilmanton Community Church would like to thank you all for
supporting us at our recent Italian supper and youth group labor auction.
Our youth group members were “hired” by various families who donated money
for their services. The youth agreed in advance to the chores they would do.
The parents were asked for their approval.
This fundraising event was to
raise money for the youth to attend the Soul Fest Christian Music Festival.
It was originally referred to as a “slave auction” as this is what many
organizations through the years have called it. However, before the
fundraiser took place, we had an All Church Council Meeting to change the
name to “labor auction”. This was done so as not to give any reference to
slavery, which is something that we, as a church, would never support. We
were concerned that even such a casual reference towards it might be as
disturbing to some as it was to us. Unfortunately, the information about
this fundraiser was sent to the papers before we made this important change.
We apologize for this oversight and regret if this caused any difficulty
among the readers.
Sincerely,
Pastor Christopher Stevens And The
Gilmanton Community Church
New Bookshelves For Gilmanton Corner Library
The Gilmanton Corner Public
Library Trustees recently sent a letter to members of our community
soliciting funds to replace very old sagging bookshelves.
During the
past four years, the library replaced most of the shelves. With support from
the community, we hope to complete this project.
We understand that we
were unable to reach everyone with our initial mailing, but we don’t want to
exclude anyone who would like to contribute to this restoration.
Letters
describing our appeal are available at the library. A visit will give you a
chance to view the library, see our May library display “Get Caught
Reading,” and become a member. Your library card will let you take advantage
of our free museum passes to the SEE Science Center, the Currier Art Museum,
and the New Hampshire Historical Society, as well as the other benefits the
library offers.
We welcome any donation. If you cannot stop by the
library and would like to make a donation, our mailing address is: Gilmanton

This morning, 29 April, the Gilmanton Fire Department came to my
rescue. Yesterday I burned a brush pile that was on a huge pile of damp
leaves that had been there for years, and I couldn’t put it out once the
brush was gone. Even though they were soaking wet from the rain, the leaves
just kept smoldering into the night, as much as I tried to cover them up and
smother it. Last attempt was at 4 a.m. Finally the fire department, alerted
by the smoke, came and put it out early this morning.
Chief KG Lockwood
and his crew were efficient, courteous, pleasant, and didn’t seem to mind
too much being called away at 6:30 in the morning. I regret the trouble I
caused them. We are fortunate to have men like this in our fire department.
Thank you.
