Some of the items needed for the baskets are: stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, spaghetti sauce, pasta, cream of mushroom soup, canned gravy, tuna, mayonnaise, bottled juices, sugar, coffee, muffin and cake mixes,  frosting, pickles and olives.

We also are asking for donations of hams, breads, rolls, butter/margarine, milk, eggs, fresh fruit, potatoes, squash, and onions.

If you wish to make a monetary donation towards the purchase of items for the holiday baskets you can mail a check, payable to GCC Food Pantry, with a notation of holiday food baskets on the memo line, to GCC Food Pantry & Thrift Shop, PO Box 6, Gilmanton IW, NH 03837.

Jeff Hawkins Sets Track Record

Jeff Hawkins, son of Helen and the late Rolland Hawkins of Gilmanton Iron Works recently took his home built race car to Watkin’s Glen International Road Course in New York, expecting nothing more than to drive on one of the top 5 most prestigious road courses in America.  Little did he expect to not only win the race, but to beat the track record by nearly 8 seconds while achieving a top speed of 184 mph.

This is the second track Jeff has driven on.  The first being the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, where he also set the track record earlier this year.

Jeff hopes to travel Mid Ohio Sports Car Course next year in search of another track record.

Letter

My campaign for State Representative from Gilmanton has been such a valuable experience. I have been most grateful for all the enthusiastic support I have received.

I spent many hours at the Transfer Station and going door-to-door to try to meet as many people as I could. I believe it is important to reach out to the members of the community you want to represent; to hear their concerns.  I have appreciated the gracious inquiries about my positions and good wishes.

We are fortunate to live in a state that has been recognized for its many advantages:
• NH has the highest standard of living and the lowest poverty rate.
• NH is rated 7th most friendly business state.
• NH is the safest state in the country.
• NH is the best state to raise a family.
• NH has the 2nd fastest rate of job growth in the country - 10,000 new jobs this past year and commitments from companies for thousands more.
• NH TAXES ARE THE LOWEST IN AMERICA AS A PERCENTAGE OF INCOME.

We can all be proud of these achievements.  Under Democratic leadership, the NH budget is balanced and we have a surplus. There is much more work to be done, but a one-note approach of “just cut” will not be successful.  Complicated demanding problems need thoughtful creative solutions.

I hope the new Legislators are prepared to accept the good work that has brought us this far and will draw on multiple resources to continue to care for the citizens of New Hampshire.

Thank you for this opportunity.

Gilmanton Fire Department Receives NH Resource Conservation & Development Assistance With Efforts To Improve Fire Fighting Capability

Sawyer Lake Draft Site

Over the last several years the New Hampshire Rural Fire Protection Initiative (NHRFPI) has been working with fire departments throughout the state to improve the water supply capability for fire fighting in rural communities.  Through the NHRFPI, a project directed by the North Country and Southern NH Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area Councils, communities are able to receive free technical assistance to improve their fire fighting capability.

The Town of Gilmanton recently benefited from this project through the development of a Rural Fire Water Resource Plan.  Up-to-date rural water supply plans are an extremely useful tool for planning emergency responses to rural fire situations, and also provide a framework for community planners to identify priority areas for future installations of water drafting facilities such as dry hydrants and cisterns.

Gilmanton’s Rural Fire Water Resource Plan provides the town with detailed maps of its current water drafting sites, such as the draft site at Sawyer Lake depicted in the photo, potential sites for future development, and sites improved with dry hydrants or cisterns.  A detailed description of each site is included in the plan along with recommendations and resources to assist the town in formulating a long term plan for development of their rural water supplies.

For further information or to review the plan, contact either the Town Manager or Fire Department.  The NHRFPI is currently funded through the NH Homeland Security and Emergency Management office.  For more information about the program please contact the NHRFPI office at 527-2093, or visit their website at http://www.nhrcd.net/RFPI/RFPIindex.htm.
