Curator Wanted for Gilmanton Historical Society

Gilmanton Historical Society maintains a wonderful museum, located in the Gilmanton Academy Building (town offices). The museum includes artifacts as well as documents and photographs connected with the history of the Town.   Long time curators Barbara Angevine and Marion McIntyre are looking for one or two people interested in taking over responsibility for maintaining and cataloging the collection.

This is an opportunity to learn about the history of Gilmanton, and to share that knowledge with townsfolk and visitors. Besides caring for the museum and its contents, the curators prepare exhibits for the display case in the entrance corridor at the Academy. The Society has donated a display cabinet to the new Year-Round Library, scheduled to open on September 12. This case is another opportunity to share Gilmanton’s history with library patrons, and especially children and young people who use the library.

Anyone interested in taking over the curatorial responsibilities, should contact Barbara Angevine at 267-6132 or the Society’s president, John Dickey at 267-8098.

Gilmanton Year-Round Library Opening Features Wacondah Horn Quartet

French Horn players from the Wacondah Pond Horn Club will help the Gilmanton Year-round Library celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, September 12.

The Gilmanton Year-Round Library grand opening will feature a quartet from the Wacondah Pond Horn Club. The music will welcome people to the celebration beginning at two o’clock on Saturday afternoon, September 12 at the Library on Route 140 opposite the Gilmanton School.  The new library will be free and open to all Gilmanton residents and property owners.

The quartet includes:  Mary Sawyer, the music teacher from Gilmanton, who plays many instruments as well as horn; John Welch, a retired physician and an active pilot, who has played horn since he was a child; Vickie Wood Parrish, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Gilford, and a pianist before she started horn; and Suzanne Satnick, a retired investment counselor and former oboist.

All of these musicians play in other groups as well: Lakes Region Symphony, Carter Mountain Brass Band, Nevers Band, Gilford Community Band, Lakes Region Big Band, Center Harbour Band, and many others.

Wacondah Pond Horn Club was organized in 2003 when four women discovered how much fun it was to play together! Over the years, they expanded to include one man, forming a quintet. Then they started taking the challenge of organizing horn concerts in the Lakes Region. Currently there are about 15 local horn players who meet 8 times a year to play , enjoy wonderful meals, and swim in Wacondah Lake. Between social meetings, the quintet meets weekly and prepares music for duets, trios and quartets as well as quintets.
