Rebecca Rule Returns To Gilmanton Historical Society
Story-teller Rebecca Rule comes to Gilmanton Historical
Society, May 26th, Old Town Hall, Gilmanton Iron Works, 7:30 pm.
Famed New Hampshire story-teller Rebecca Rule opens the summer season for
the Gilmanton Historical Society on Tuesday, May 26, 7:30 pm at the Old Town
Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works.
With her inimitable style of New Hampshire humor, Rebecca Rule tells stories
that speak to us of community. They hold our history and reflect our
identity. For more than ten years, she has collected stories of New
Hampshire, especially those that reflect what’s special about this rocky old
place. She’ll tell some of them — her favorites are the funny ones — and
invite audience members to contribute a few of their own.
The summer program series continues at the Gilmanton Academy in Gilmanton
Corner on June 23rd with Dressing A Colonial Lady. Mary Spencer
will dress, layer upon layer, in an authentic reproduction of a 1770s gown,
complete with “stays,” stomacher, petticoat and a “bumroll.”
July 28th brings a program on Gilmanton 1900 to 1920 drawn from
newspaper reports of the time. Readings from the newspaper articles are
illustrated with photos of the period. 7:30 pm at Old Town Hall in
Gilmanton Iron Works.
Steve Taylor, former NH Commissioner of Agriculture, tells us how sheep
raising in the mid 19th century changed the New Hampshire landscape, with a
talk on The Great New Hampshire Sheep Boom on August 25th at the Gilmanton
Academy Building.
The final program in the series, on September 22nd at the Old Town Hall, is
Before Peyton Place: In Search of the Real Grace Metalious. Robert Perreault
introduces us to the young Grace De Repentigny Metalious, revealing a side
of the author that has remained largely unknown to the general public.
All programs are free and open to the public; donations are gratefully
accepted. Refreshments and social hour begin at 7 pm, with the
program beginning promptly at 7:30.
