On Tuesday, October 13, the Gilmanton Corner Public Library presented the Gilmanton Elementary School with a collection of twenty-five large laminated pictures along with a teacher’s manual and bookmarks that our Library received from a National Endowment of the Humanities and American Library Association Grant. These pictures encourage young people to read and understand great literature while exploring themes in American History. We are sure these pictures will greatly enhance the school’s history and art programs. Please stop by the school to ask to see them as they are quite beautiful.

The Ocean
As I walk upon the brisk sound.
I can hear waves crashing louder and louder.
As I sink into the sand with every step.

I can barely stand the hot sand.
Burning my feet as I wade across the sand.
I still go forward knowing that the
Ocean is right over those hilltops.

Now the sun is unbearably hot on my feet.
Next I sprint down the sandy beach.
I see the ocean yes, I hear at the ocean.
I smell the new salty breezy air.
Hear the brisk cold ocean.
See the fresh smacking waves.

The ocean is where I want to be.
I lay back as I squint my eye lids.
Then I drift into a nice slumber.
With a quiet kind of peace.

Now I have to leave, good by for now.

Connecting Boys with Books: A Discussion

Boys in America are failing to read at an alarming rate. You do not need to see studies to realize that boys on average read much less than girls, and much less well, but there is plenty of research to show this anyway. Reading is important both to function in our ever-changing world, and to get the most out of life. Boys’ reading failure puts their academic and economic futures in peril, and limits their ability to reach their full potential. How did this come to be?  And how can we turn this trend around for our boys?

Join Michael Sullivan, teacher, author, librarian, and storyteller, at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library on Thursday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m. as he discusses how boys become non-readers and why, and what the consequences are for boys. He has spoken and published, both nationally and internationally, on this topic to audiences of teachers, parents, and librarians. He will share proven strategies from research and twenty years experience to turn boys into avid, life-long readers.

Sullivan was raised in Alton, New Hampshire, and as a boy would often ride his bike through Gilmanton.

He now lives in Portsmouth. He is a former special needs teacher, children’s librarian and director of three New Hampshire libraries. He was once a program leader at the Boston Museum of Science. His books for educators include Connecting Boys with Books: What Librarians Can Do and Connecting Boys with Books 2: Closing the Reading Gap. His books for children include his humor series set in New Hampshire, Escapade Johnson and Mayhem at Mount Moosilaukie, Escapade Johnson and the Coffee Shop of the Living Dead, winner of the 2009 Mom’s Choice award for best juvenile fiction, Escapade Johnson and the Witches of Belknap County, and Escapade Johnson and the Phantom of the Science Fair, as well as the first book in his new fantasy series The Sapphire Knight.

The Gilmanton Year-Round Library is located at 1385 Route 140 in Gilmanton Iron Works directly across from the Gilmanton School.  This program is free and open to the public. The Library is handicapped accessible. For further inquiries please call the Library at 364-2400.
