Letter

Dear Neighbors,
Something in Gilmanton is not working correctly and who is at risk? Your children are, if they enter Crystal Lake Park. On Sept. 10th I reported vandalism at the park, telling Gilmanton Police Department that there was obscene graffiti painted on a skateboard ramp and there were loose boards strewn about with exposed nails. I was not even the first to make a report since today I learned that other neighbors had made a police report about this situation over Labor Day weekend.

If you were to see this vandalism at its worst you would wonder why this crime scene, after investigation by GPD, was not secured and the obscenity blocked from view, with follow up for the clean up. The department took their pictures and left this hazard just as they found it. I took it upon myself on Sept. 21st to call the Parks and Recreation Director because nothing had been done to make this area safe again. Gary Lines responded the same day and started the clean up. However, as of today it is still not safe - “an accident waiting to happen.”

I propose two remedies. First: the missing link must be mended that allowed out police department to walk away from a site that continued to pose danger to others. Second: parents must monitor what their children are doing and don’t take it for granted that they are safe just because they are at the park. Pop in on them once and awhile - “just because you love them.”

Respectfully
Brenda McBride
