Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield,

This week, the House met for the last planned session this year. The first issue was an “enrolled bill” amendment on SB66, the fetal homicide bill, correcting some language that seemed to allow a pregnant woman to murder anyone with impunity. It was debated at length, with most of the opposition from individuals who opposed the bill originally. A motion to table failed, 177-190, and the amendment passed, 196-173.

The real action was on the budget, now in HB144 and HB517 rather than HB1 and HB2, which remain on the table. The Senate sent it to us at 11 am, and after an hour of largely partisan debate, we passed HB144, 198-169. Of course, I voted for it- committee chairs are expected to, but I would have anyway since it includes tax cuts and even a total repeal. HB517, the trailer bill, after a shorter debate, passed 212-161.

SB191, establishing keno and funding full day kindergarten, was debated on peculiar bases. Most of the opponents supported kindergarten but disliked relying on keno, but some were opposed to full day kindergarten. Since I don’t like expanding the state’s obligations, I voted against the combination. It passed regardless, 251-111.

Epsom Library News

Build a Better World is the theme for the Epsom Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program (ASRP) which gets under way this week.  Sign up at  the circulation desk, pick up the pamphlet and get reading! For each book you read or listen to, fill out a coupon for the gift card raffle at the end of the program in August.  You are not required to read any number of books or a particular genre but adding your reads to the raffle jar improves your chances of winning.

Our first evening program for the ASRP is a returning favorite – Liz Barbour of Creative Feasts.  She will be at the library Monday, July 10 at 7:00 with her “Feasting From the Cookbook” presentation.  She just published her new cookbook “Beautifully Delicious: Cooking with Herbs and Edible Flowers,” and will be preparing a couple of recipes from the book for those attending. We have to let her know how many will be coming for grocery shopping purposes so we MUST have sign ups at the front desk by July 5.  If you can’t come to the library to sign up, please call 736-9920 and ask us to register you.
