On Wednesday, April 5 at
1:30 the Epsom Public Library will be showing the film “Fences.”
Starring Academy Award winners Denzel Washington and Viola
Davis, it was called, “One of the best films of the year,” by Peter
Travers of Rolling Stone magazine. This is a film adaptation
of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play. Set in 1950’s
Pittsburgh, it tells the story of former Negro-league baseball
player as he fights to provide for his family in a world that pushes
him down.

To my
constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield,
This week, my
committee presented five House bills to the Senate ED&A committee.
HB184, now moving the effective date for medical imaging licenses,
was supported by the hospitals and the board, and the senators voted
4-0 to recommend it to pass. HB538, which had been mandatory
licenses for people licensed in other jurisdictions, was presented
by the sponsor who recommended that they either kill the bill or
restore it to its initial form. I argued for our amendment, citing
the lack of facts in the debate on attracting new workers in many
licensed professions. I believe the senate will incorporate our
language – requiring that reciprocity data be made public by every
board – in another bill and kill HB538.
HB468, licensing mental
health professionals from other states within 60 days of applying,
caused a number of questions from the committee. I mentioned that
LADACs (licensed alcohol and other drug counselors) should also be
included, and I believe that the senate will do so. HB595, replacing
some positions in the secretary of state’s office with different job
descriptions (eliminating clerks and adding database specialists) in
a budget neutral manner, was unopposed and the committee voted, 3-0,
to pass it. HB650, procedures of the psychiatrists’ board, was also
unopposed, but there was some testimony recommending minor changes.
The entire Merrimack County delegation met to review and approve the
budget. The last review identified almost $200,000 of budget cuts,
but we weren’t able to repeat that! The budget passed, with a 3.3%
increase in the amount to be raised by taxes. The increase is
largely due to bond payments and new employee contracts – both
previously approved by the delegation – and the increase in
retirement payments and health insurance, and the county can’t do
much about those.

Epsom Food Pantry
Well, another voting day over. We had a table in the foyer and
oh were people generous. We are very grateful for your
generosity and we shall put it to good use.
Several folks stopped
and thanked me for taking the time to do this article. I was pleased
that you all enjoy it.
On that note I will tell you we need jam
or jelly. I shall leave the flavor up to you, but kids do love
strawberry.
Liz went to a meeting this week to meet the new
director of the main Food Bank. She said she was very nice and
seemed to listen to the suggestions of the local food pantry reps as
to some improvements that could be made and some items that could be
added to the stock for our members.
Again, people, do not forget
us in the planting of your garden. Keep an eye out for the
family that needs help and if they are not coming to us, let me
know. Sometimes pride holds folks back and as I have said many
times, we all need a helping hand at some time in life.

Scholarship Fund Donation
On March 15, 2017 Members of the White
Mountain Chapter of the Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club
Donated $1000.00 dollars to the Officer Michael Briggs Scholarship
Fund at the Epsom Central School. The Epsom Central
school holds an annual Spaghetti Dinner to raise funds for the
Scholarship in Fallen Officer Michael Briggs Name. You

Obituaries
Madelyn Ward
EPSOM –
Madelyn Ward, 77 of Epsom, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March
19, 2017 at Epsom Healthcare surrounded by her family.
Born on
May 21, 1939 in Lake Charles, LA, she was the daughter of the late
Earl Benton Worthy and Eva (Roderick) Worthy.
Madelyn was a
homemaker who was devoted to her husband and children. She loved
collecting dolls and clocks and enjoyed wearing jewelry and going
shopping.
Besides her parents, Madelyn was predeceased by a
daughter, Diana Cheryl Dietlein, in 1967 as well as a brother,
Donald Gene Worthy, and a sister, Earleen Green Smith.
She is
survived by her husband of 45 years, Lawrence “Larry” Tilton Ward of
Epsom; sons, David Karl Dietlein and his wife Karen of Woodbridge,
VA, Darrel Richard Dietlein and his wife Karen of Franconia, NH;
daughters, Deborah Anne Foch of Upper Marlboro, MD, Donna Susan
Wilson and her husband Daniel of Columbia, CT, Julie Susan Ward of
Epsom, NH, and Nancy Elizabeth Swett and her husband Daniel of
Chichester, NH; stepchildren, Samuel Ward of Concord, NH, Shannon
Bryant and her husband Robert of Fremont, NH, and Sandborn “Sandy”
Ward and his wife Diane of Litchfield, NH; 19 grandchildren, 25
great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A
service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.
Interment will take place at McClary Cemetery in Epsom. The
Still Oaks Funeral and Memorial Home in Epsom is assisting the
family with arrangements. The family would like donations to be sent
