the Epsom Library will be showing the comedy The Hollars at 1:30 PM.
The next movie matinee at
the library will be USS Indianapolis – Men of Courage on Wednesday,
February 8 at 1:30. Starring Nicholas Cage, Tom Sizemore and
Thomas Jane, the film recounts the harrowing tale of real-life
American heroes shipwrecked in shark-infested waters in the waning
days of World War II.
Epsom Public Library Youth Events
“Take Your Child to the
Library Breakfast!” Saturday, February 18th 9:30 am. Celebrate with
a special Dr. Seuss themed breakfast, stories and a craft. Children
will receive a free book, stickers and bookmark! Reservations are

Letter To The Editor
Last year was another
very productive year. We did a lot of paving and prep
for paving, besides the normal road maintenance.
This year we will be
installing the bridge on Echo Valley Farm Road and paving the high
maintenance areas on the gravel roads. This will help with
time management and lower long term cost.
The other day we got a
call from a resident saying we treated their road differently than
the rest of the roads and as it turned out, in fact we had. I
am sorry that it happened and will try not to have it happen again.
Every winter is a little
different. This year, so far, it seems and has been a little colder
than normal. But look at it this way, only 30-50 days to mud season
and 70-80- days to spring!

To my constituents in
Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield,
Another busy week in the state
house! My committee heard the first group of pension changes, with
HB369, which stretches the amortization of retirement system
unfunded accrued liability for another ten years, and HB425, which
artificially sets the rate of return at 7.75%, both attempting to
manipulate the retirement system to lower local payments for
previously earned pensions. Since this was how the state got itself
into the pension problems we’re now suffering from – trying to lower
town payments against actuarial advice – the committee was not very
sympathetic to the measures proposed.
HB 542, requiring retired
members employed part-time position to contribute to the retirement
system, HB 543, forbidding a retiree to return to part-time
employment to the same employer, and HB 561, on contributions by
employers of retirees working part-time, and on enforcement of
limitations on retired members working part time, all addressed the
issue of “double dipping.” Since they could be conflicting, all
three went to subcommittee for reconciliation.
I also presented three
bills to other committees. HB291, removing veterinarians from the
controlled drug prescription program, was supported by many
veterinarians, but others had concerns. Local Representatives Howard
Pearl (Louden) and Barbara Comptois (Barnstead) are on the committee
and are working to craft an amendment that addresses these issues
but keeps the intent of my bill. HB386, technical corrections to the
education tax credit, went to the Education committeee, rather than
Ways & Means, so they had almost no questions. HB470, a repeat of
last year’s bill on storm and sewer penalties, went to the committee
on resources, recreation and development, but some of the lawyers
who killed it last year came to oppose it. I’ll have to work on this
one, since they seem unfamiliar with this sort of case.
