Awana Club Holds Annual Grand Prix Race

Epsom 2012_grand_prix_014.jpg

Epsom Bible Church Awana Club held their annual Grand Prix race on Saturday, March 24th at the church gym. The Grand Prix is similar to a Pinewood Derby, with the clubbers building their cars from a block of wood.

We had 23 kids entering cars, which were eligible for trophies in both the speed and design divisions. Four "heats" of races narrowed the field down to just 3 cars by the final race in the speed division.

The final winners in the Speed Division were:

• 1st place: Wanda Anderson

• 2nd place: Elijah Allen

• 3rd place: Rachel St. Louis

In the Design Division the winners were:

• 1st place: Tucker Sargent (a taco)

• 2nd place: Elijah Allen (a clothespin)

• 3rd place: Sarah Osborne (a rabbit).

Ribbons were presented to all the clubbers who participated.

Epsom Scouts.JPG

Epsom Pack 80 Cub Scouts held its annual Pinewood Derby at the Epsom Fire Station recently with about 40 racers participating in 120 heats of intense competition! This was a real EVENT with rockin’ music, an engaging MC, full concessions, and raucous fans! The racing was action-packed, and the racers demonstrated some creative and fast cars!

Letter

Are Rush Limbaugh supporters uninformed or simply forgetful? Calls have been made for Limbaugh to be fired for outrageous comments he made about a private citizen, a woman speaking up for birth control pill inclusion in AHCA coverage. He called her a "sl--" among other things on our freely accessed airwaves.

Limbaugh’s supporters whine that "those on the left...Comedian Bill Maher and Radio Talk Show Host Don Imus were just as bad...".

What Limbaugh’s supporters are unaware of or have simply forgotten is that rather than whining, Bill Maher and Don Imus each "took it like a man" and moved on. One now has to pay a premium to listen to their "outrageous" comments.

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield:

This week the House and Senate overrode the Governor’s veto of the House redistricting plan, 246-112 and 17-7. Now it goes to the Federal Department of Justice for approval, since New Hampshire falls under their purview. I understand that some lawsuits are expected, but at least we know what the districts will be for this year’s election.

The House also killed this year’s expanded gambling plan, 154-195, with Dan and Tony Soltani joining me in opposition; Jon Richardson was unable to attend. Tony spoke against it, claiming that casinos and gambling are like a tax on the poorest and least educated citizens. Dan and I believed that the plan to limit licenses to only four was an unconstitutional monopoly, with additional concerns about corruption and getting the best deal for the citizens of the state influencing other Representatives.

HB1659, requiring a 24 hour wait before an abortion and mandating that certain information be provided by the doctor, was extensively debated and failed to pass, 164-181. After some parliamentary maneuvers, it was amended to only require the 24 hour waiting period and passed, 185-138. I voted against the mandated information but spoke in favor of the waiting period, and Dan and Tony were solidly for the bill.

HB1648, requiring cross-checking a number of public databases with welfare and Medicaid recipients, passed 245-84. A test of the system found almost 9% of the names were problematic, including out of state addresses, state prisoners, and a couple of dead people receiving welfare. Probably some of these are data errors, but eliminating welfare fraud is something everyone should support.

Interested readers can email me for my newsletter, with more details than I can fit in a letter.

Running 101 Seminar Coming To Concord

Ironman Finisher And Ultramarathon Runner Teaches Beginners And

Pros Alike How To Run Right And Finish Strong

Spring is in the air, and for many that means lacing up the sneakers and hitting the road. Unfortunately for many it also means shin splints, sore knees, and achy hips. But does it have to be that way?

Coach Dean Carlson of Get Fit NH Bootcamp doesn’t think so. "Running doesn’t have to hurt, but you need to prepare your body and know what you are doing" Carlson says. "While it’s easy to put on a pair of shoes and head out the door, we see way too many injuries that just don’t have to happen."

To help runners get ready and stay healthy, on April 21, 2012 Get Fit NH will be holding a running clinic from 8 am to 12 pm with Dr. Brett Coapland, owner of Performance Health Spine and Sports Therapy.

"Dr. Coapland specializes in sports injury and has a special interest in evaluating running mechanics as well as treating running injuries" Coach Carlson continues "He is uniquely qualified as both a clinician and an accomplished endurance athlete."

Running 101, from Beginner to Advanced starts with a lecture covering running mechanics, training principles, recovery, and injury prevention. Following the lecture will be a hands on portion that will include putting proper running mechanics into practice, corrective exercise, and an optional group run.

The cost of the seminar is $40 and participants can register online at http://GetFitNHbootcamp.com.

To find out more about Get Fit NH Bootcamp and our clinics and workshops please contact Dean or Nancy Carlson at (603) 344-2651, or visit online at http://www.getfitnhbootcamp.com
