Letter

To My Constituents In Allenstown, Epsom, And Pittsfield:
I’m the chair of the committee working on HB1631, about the relationship between the fire code and the building code. We met this week to discuss the issues and identify what areas needed to be studied. We have the entire month of July to work on these studies, since the Legislature has no meetings that month. I’m looking at the issue of renovations: who decides that an old building needs to be updated, and what criteria are used to make that decision. This can be a very expensive area: for example, older public schools in both Unity and Rochester are facing extensive updates after being inspected by the state fire marshal’s office.

Governor Lynch has invited me to the bill-signing ceremony for SB495, the state procurement bill I worked on in committee. The interesting thing about it is that I led the floor fight against the majority amendment - which added a “pilot program” of best value purchasing before the procurement commission decided what best value meant for New Hampshire! I actually voted against the bill.

I hope that everyone had a good Independence Day, and I hope to meet you on the campaign trail this summer. If re-elected, I will continue to inform you of what I and other legislators are doing in Concord.

Anyone interested in what’s going on at the State House is invited to email or call me; those who’d like a more detailed report than I can fit in The Sun should email me for my newsletter.

Epsom Library News

Local author Margaret Evans Porter will be the first guest speaker for Epsom Public Library’s summer reading program for adults on July 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the large meeting room at the library.

An award-winning author of eleven British-set historical novels, her books have had multiple publishers in both hardcover and paperback editions, including best sellers. In addition, many foreign editions of her books have been published.

Margaret studied British history in the U.K. and returned to the U.S. to complete her theater training. After earning her M.A. in Radio-Television-Film, she was a freelance writer and producer for film and video projects.

A former longtime member of the Concord Monitor Board of Contributors, she currently writes articles on British history and travel and presents workshops on historical research and writing techniques at national and regional writers’ conferences. Her poetry has been featured in the literary magazine Granite Review.

A member of the Authors Guild, Novelists, Inc., and Biographers International Organization, Margaret is listed in Who’s Who in America; Who’s Who in Authors, Editors, and Poets; and Who’s Who in Entertainment. She is serving her second term in New Hampshire’s House of Representatives. Her interests and activities include walking her dogs, rose gardening, playing the mandolin, knitting, and volunteering.

The library’s first-ever summer program for adults consists of three themes: “Water Your Mind,” July 12 -July 23; “Water Your Garden,” July 26-August 6; and “Water Your Soul,” August 9-20. “Water Your Mind” will focus on having fun with lighter summer reading, featuring books for both men and women.
