significant contributions to the community. In the past year the
Ladies Aid has made and donated quilts to the Shriners Children’s
Hospital, as well as comfort pillows with pillowcases for cancer
patients at the Payson Center in Concord; they have also made
memorial donations to the Epsom Library. The Ladies Aid invites any

June 16. If you would like to attend, please call either Eris
Tirrell (736-9567) or Judy Tumey (736-3378) so they can make the

Letter
To
my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, & Pittsfield: The
Legislature voted on Committee of Conference reports this week. Only
one bill was killed: HB1459, 135-184. This had cleaned up the
statutes on trusts, but the Senate required corporations to register
when spending over $10,000 on political ads, and allowing candidates
to sue if the forms weren’t filled out properly. This amendment had
only one public hearing, and even the proponents admitted it was
subject to differing legal interpretations. In addition, the
restrictions applied to businesses and most non-profits, including
educational and fraternal groups: only charities and unions were
exempt. It was upsetting that a better update of political
advertising, including all types of organizations and expanding the
disclosure requirements, had passed the House in March and promptly
been tabled by the Senate! Several constituents had sent me warnings
about this bill, adding to my reasons to vote against. I was the
only Representative from the district to do so.
Since the Committees of Conference on budget bills had been unable
to reach agreement, there were no new taxes or borrowing passed to
balance the budget. The Governor can cut spending on his own, but he
needs the Legislature to pass revenue increases. Therefore, he
called for a special session next week. All budget changes will have
to start anew, so it will be interesting to see what is proposed.
Thursday I signed up for reelection! I’ve learned a lot during my
term, and I hope to be able to continue to serve you in Concord. At
least four other Republicans plan to run for the House, so we’ll
have a primary September 14. The Suncook Valley Republicans are
having a free cookout Saturday afternoon, June 12, in Epsom’s
Webster Park, to meet the candidates. I still have a few tickets
left, so please call or email me for them.
Anyone interested in what’s going on at the State House is invited
to email or call me; those who’d like a more detailed report than I
can fit in The Sun should email me for my newsletter.
