Epsom Public Library Activities
On May 1 at 7:00 p.m. the Epsom
Historical Association, in conjunction with the Epsom Public Library will
present Part One of Epsom History, featuring Carlton Rand. Mr. Rand will
reprise his program on early Epsom history first presented in 2001. Because
the presentation was seven years ago the library is repeating the original
program and then will continue the history in another program in the fall.
The May program will trace the founding of Epsom by following the first
twenty home lots and the people who settled them. Settlers including the
McClary, Wallace, Blake, McCoy and Locke families struggled to set up the
town while meeting the requirements of settlement, such as building a
meetinghouse, acquiring a preacher, building the first road and a garrison
for protection. Inhabitants of Rye, Greenland, and New Castle set out to
establish their new community.
There will be refreshments served during
this entertaining and informative program.
For more information, call the
Epsom Library at 736-9920 or email: [email protected].
On Friday, May 8th
at 7:00 PM, The Friends of the Epsom Public Library will host “Two (Poetic)
Tramps in Mud Time, An Evening of Poetry,” featuring the poets Maren C.
Tirabassi of Portsmouth and Neil English of Epsom. The evening will begin
with readings of several spring poems by Robert Frost, and Frost-inspired
poems by Tirabassi. The remainder of the first half of the program will
showcase the poetry of Tirabassi and English.
After a break for refreshments, the featured poets will turn the performance
over to the members of the audience for a traditional “open mic” reading.
This is the perfect opportunity for you to share that poem you’ve written
that’s been languishing on the top of your bedroom dresser for waaay too
long, or for you to share a favorite poem written by someone else.
Come
prepared to listen to the stories of the poems, come prepared to hear the
words sing from the page and come prepared to watch poetic images appear in
your mind’s eye. But most of all, come prepared to enjoy an evening of the
spoken word.
Art classes will continue on Mondays from 4:00 to 5:30
during the month of May. Children need to be accompanied by an adult who
would also enjoy participating in the activities. Mary Frambach of the
Gingerbread Cat Art Studio is the instructor. Participants must sign up in
advance. There is a materials charge for each class. Contact the library for
details.
The book discussion group will be
discussing Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See on May 20 at 6:30 p.m.
If you would like to join the group you may pick up a copy of the book at
the library.
On May 12 at 7:00 p.m. the library will sponsor “Gardening
Basics for Vegetables.” A second workshop will be held on May 26 at 700
p.m. on “Container Gardening.” Both programs will be presented by The
University of New Hampshire Master Gardener Speakers Bureau.
Letter
To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, & Pittsfield:
This
week we had it easy in Concord - just three bills to vote on, and no debate
on any. We are also revising our ethics rules to make clearer what is a
conflict of interest and how it should be disclosed.
My committee,
Executive Departments and Administration, which hears bills relating to the
structure of state government, held a hearing Thursday on SB 132, which
would create implementation plans to merge a number of departments. Over 250
people came to testify against this bill, most of them concerned about Fish
& Game and Agriculture. Our Representative Margaret Porter was there to
speak against the bill, but the public went first, and after 2 ½ hours of
testimony the hearing had to end before any Representatives could speak. The
committee will be working on this bill, reviewing the testimony and
evaluating options. It seems to me that these are two of the smallest and
most effective departments and there are probably better places to look for
efficiency improvements.
Anyone interested in what is going on in the
State House is invited to email or call me.
