Judy Doughty Is Featured Artist At The Epsom Public Library

The nature-inspired art of Nottingham’s Judy Doughty is currently on display in the lobby of the Epsom Public Library.  Widely known for her paintings of loons in their natural habitat, the artist works in a variety of mediums to bring us her view of the New Hampshire landscape in ways that are, at once, both majestic and serene.

The exhibit will run through March 14th and may be viewed during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additionally, the public is cordially invited to meet the artist at a special reception on Saturday, February 28, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Also not to be missed is a delightful collection of Ralph VanHorn’s miniature period furniture, currently on exhibit in our new lobby display cases.

The Socialist Party candidate for President of the US, Norman Thomas, said this in a 1944 speech:

Dear Republicans,
Stop your whinin’! Oooh, cheeze...under Obama’s stimulus package, people who don’t pay income taxes get refunds...whine, whine, whine.. redistribution of wealth...oh woe is me... —LET’S GET ONE THING PERFECTLY CLEAR! Every single wage earner in this country pays at least 7.65% in taxes to the Federal Government every single payday. Likewise every small business owner and corporation.

In 1982, the Reagan White House began “comingling” (my choice of words) Federal Income taxes with Social Security taxes in order to whitewash the deficit (remember David Stockman and the woodshed?). In my opinion, the two should have remained separate for their separate purposes.

During the baby boomer years, FICA taxes should have been decreased (benefiting wage earners AND business) or surplus put in the proverbial “lockbox”. For over two decades, that 7.65% from wage earners AND employers kept rolling in. Republicans and Democrats alike kept looking upon that excess as though it were “Aunt Gurty’s piggy bank”.

When Republicans are whinin’ about future spending, Social Security is a liability, just another piece of the overall debt pie. When divvying up the short term cash flow via tax cuts, Social Security Taxes don’t count. Not one single Republican in the House voted for Obama’s stimulus package. Tip O’Neil showed much greater class toward Reagan than McConnel, Limbaugh et al are showing for Obama and the voters who put him in power. With its main mouthpiece hoping for Obama’s failure, I would not be surprised to see the demise of the Republican Party in the near future. After all, it’s the Democrats who are fiscally responsible, walk softly, while carrying a big stick. What do you think of the Green Party becoming the “liberal alternative”?
