The Concord/Epsom Elks Lodge 1210 Is Sponsoring a “Hoop
Shoot” National Free Throw Contest
The Elks “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest is the largest most visible
of the many youth activities sponsored by Elks lodges. Over
3,000,000 boys and girls ages 8-13 will participate this year. The
Elks “Hoop Shoot” has served to highlight the Elks commitment to
America’s youth. From the millions of youngsters who participate and
advance through the local, district, state and regional competition,
six national champions are named - one boy and one girl in each of
the three categories: ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. The winners each
receive a trophy and their names are inscribed on a plaque at the
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield,
Massachusetts. Parents accompany contestants throughout the
competition. The parents of finalists at the state, regional, and
national levels attend the competition as guests of the Elks.
The Concord/Epsom Elks Lodge 1210 invites the communities of
Epsom Concord, Pittsfield, Barrington, Northwood, Nottingham,
Deerfield, Barnstead and Concord to participate in the Elks National

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, & Pittsfield: Next
year will be a very busy session in the Legislature. There are
almost 700 bill titles listed on line already, and the Senate hasn’t
even started to file its bills. I’ve filed eight bills. Three are
repeals of obsolete statutes: the crime of adultery, which hasn’t
been prosecuted in decades; a WWI vintage wartime alien registration
act; and the laws against business on Sunday. The next bill requires
only one license plate per car, which should be at least a small
cost saving.
Then I put in a clarification of one of the business taxes.
Another bill would create a forum to hear problems with the state’s
policies on children, especially child support and custody issues.
There are a lot of stories, but no good way to tackle the problems
as a whole.
The next bill I put in would forbid the state building code or
fire marshal from requiring sprinklers in residences, even though
the latest national code does so. The problem is that if you get
your water from a well, as many households do in New Hampshire,
sprinkler systems become a lot more complicated and expensive, and
less effective. Many people would not want the expense and the
trouble of maintaining a system that would only gain them a marginal
advantage in a very rare occurrence.
Finally, I put in a bill to require state employees to reimburse
the state for any personal use of state vehicles, including
commuting, at the same rate the state pays for business use of
personal cars. Right now commuting is reimbursed at a low, flat rate
that gives employees an incentive to commute in state cars.
Anyone interested in what’s going on at the State House is invited
to email or call me. Representative

Kitchen Memories, the new Epsom Historical Association cookbook
published in July, has already gone to a third printing. This
fundraising project for the organization contains tried-and-true
recipes from current and former Epsom residents, as well as
historical tidbits, anecdotes, and a wealth of photographs from the
EHA collections. Mudhook Design Studio helped to create the unique,
user-friendly layout.
The cookbook was featured in the Union Leader and proved a
popular purchase at recent local events like Epsom’s Old Home Day
and the Deerfield Fair. Additional printings will occur as necessary
to fill orders during the gift-giving season.
Copies cost $14.95 and are currently available in Epsom at
Valley Artisans, Route 4/Goboro Road, and in Northwood at Rustique,
1022 Dover Road (Route 4). There is an additional $3 postage fee for
mail orders. For information or to place an order, contact Carole
Brown at 736-4407, Betsy Bosiak at 736-4477, or Mary Frambach at
