This year the Fireworks for Old Home Day will take place on Friday,
August 15th, at Carpenter Park at 8:45 p.m. There will be a band
concert by Craig Kendall and the North Woods Playboys, starting at
6:30. We could use some food vendors for that night. The Chichester
Fire Department will be selling French fries only, so it would be
nice to have additional food items available for purchase. We could
also use some snack vendors for Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Don’t forget the Old Home Day Scavenger Hunt on Friday, August 15th.
Come at 6 p.m. to fill out the paperwork and be prepared to jump
into your car about 6:15. The Scavenger Hunt teams of family and
friends have a list of questions to answer and items to find as they
drive around Chichester. At a set time they return to the park and
their questions are scored and their items tallied. There are prizes
for the winning three teams, and everyone has fun and learns about
their town.
We couldn’t pull together an Antique Car Show for Friday, August 15,
but if anyone with an antique car would like to cruise on over and
park in the upper parking lot at Carpenter Park from 6 to 8 p.m.
we’d be delighted to have you. Antique cars are also welcome in the
Old Home Day Parade on Saturday morning. Cars in the Saturday parade
will be judged. Friday night is just for fun.
The Parade and the traditional Bean Hole Beans will
happen on Saturday, August 16th. This year’s theme is “Wide World of
Sports.” If your family or organization would like to participate in
the parade with a float, vehicle, or marching entry, please contact
Ann Davis by phone at 603-903-3891 or by e-mail at
[email protected]. There is paperwork that needs to be filled out.
Children’s events are being planned for Saturday, starting about 10
a.m. We still want to borrow some Cozy Coupes for the little ones to
“drive” around the basketball court. Call Ann Davis at 903-3891 or
tell Carol at Frekey’s Dairy Freeze if you have a Cozy Coupe to loan
for a few hours.
If your organization wants a booth at Carpenter Park
for Old Home Day, you need to turn in your paperwork. Contact Ann
Davis by phone at 603-903-3891 or by e-mail at
[email protected]

Have you ever wanted a chance to express you vision of a village
center along Historic Main Street? What about the increased traffic
on the cut-off? What about the walk ability and pedestrian safety?
All this and much more will be the focus of Plan NH’s Community
Design Charrette scheduled for October 17th and 18th. Through open
discussion, tenn to twelve planners will donate their time to help
raise awareness of ideas and possibilities for this area. On
Saturday the 18th, a presentation will be made to the community
about what the planning team saw and heard as well as
recommendations. Plan NH carries a planning team value of nearly
$40,000 and is only awarded to two or three communities each year
following a competitive application process. The Board of Selectmen
and the Chichester Planning Board have endorsed this visioning
opportunity.
To cover Plan NH’s administrative cost, we are looking for 50
citizens willing to pledge $100, or any amount). No taxpayer money
will be used; all funding will be raised from private sources. All
donations are tax deductible. Pledge forms are available from the
Heritage Commission and the Historical Society. If one cannot give
money, there are many other ways to help. Overnight accommodations
will be needed for some of the planners. We will need food for
breakfast, two lunches and a pot luck supper. There are many other
details that will require volunteer help. If you can help, call
Bernie at 736-7074 or Lucille at 736.5709.
The Heritage Commission has other projects underway. The second
phase of the Grange/Town Hall Window Restoration and Weatherization
Project is in progress. The last ten windows to be restored have
been removed and transported to Olde Window Restorers in Weare, NH.
The windows will be reinstalled in about six weeks with new paint
and glazing, funded through a Moose Plate Grant awarded by the NH
Division of Historical Resources and private donors. The Commission
is currently contacting residents of Webster Mills Road to see if
there is an interest in having this beautiful road considered as a
“scenic road.” Chichester currently has four designated scenic roads
under RSA 231;157-158. This designation protects roadside trees and
stone walls, with respect for landscape areas that contribute to
community character. Adoption of a scenic road is voted on at a town
meeting.
The charge of the Heritage Commission is to preserve community
character. We can advise home and barn owners of NH State Historic
Register inventories, barn assessment grants, barn easements (79-D),
and offer other information pertaining to preservation efforts.
Meetings are held the third Thursday of every month at 7 pm at the
Chichester Town Library. All meetings are open to the public. There
is currently an alternate member position available. For more
information about the Heritage Commission call 798-5709.
Letter to the Editor
The Pleasure of Politics!
What I hate most about politics is the petty bickering; what I love
the most about politics is the positive collaboration. A letter on
this page last week that was written about me and Richard DeBold’s
candidacy for State Representative, represents the former, while
what we accomplished this past legislative session definitely falls
in the latter category!
It is typical in the legislature that the Democrats vote for one
budget, the Republicans vote for another and whoever is in the
majority gets their budget passed. For the first time in anyone’s
memory, that did not play out this past term! In reaction to the
extreme budget cuts of the Obrien reign, our legislature came
together with close to 90% of our members voting for one budget!
This budget reversed the deep cuts made to NHTI, UNH and mental
health care without increasing ANY taxes and without the constant
bellicose headlines of the previous term.
Politics is best, when we work together. This is why I am asking
you to support the following intelligent, collaborative and
respectful candidates: Richard Debold, Dave Doherty, Dianne Schuett
and Nancy Fraher.
As always, I am respectfully yours,
Rep. Sally Kelly

Another free, family movie matinee is scheduled for today at 3 p.m.
The Snowball Express is a comedy about a man who inherits a ski
resort in the Rocky Mountains. He quits his job in New York and
moves the family west to run it, only to find that the place is a
wreck. Come enjoy the challenges that face the family as they try
to make the resort successful. (There’s even free popcorn!)
On August 8th at 3 p.m., the participants of the Summer Reading
Program will be gathering for an afternoon of Legos and fun.
Following on the theme of “Fizz, Boom, Read,” those attending will
be using the Legos as the building blocks for their own
science-related projects. Let the imaginations soar!
Monday, August 11th at 6:30 p.m., the Writers’ Group will be hosting
author Jessica Lander. The public is invited. Please see the
separate article about this event.
There will be no meeting in August for the Lovers of the Chichester
Library.
Don’t forget the bicycle raffles, which continue through this month.
Come on into the Library to buy raffle tickets.
The Library has a new destination for families to enjoy, the Warner
Telephone Museum. The Chichester Grange has graciously provided a
membership to the Library which will help enable families to explore
this destination. Don’t forget the Library also has discounted (or
free) admission tickets to Canterbury Shaker Village and the
galleries at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center. Just stop by
the Library to ask about these opportunities.

Writers’ Group To Host Jessica Lander
The Chichester Town Library Writer’s Group will be hosting author
Jessica Lander on August 11th at 6:30 p.m. A recent interview for
the New Hampshire Writer’s Project introduced many to the author and
to her new book, Driving Backwards. Driving Backwards is set in
Gilmanton, NH, the setting for another famous novel, Peyton Place.
So what is it about Gilmanton that attracted the author?
To begin with, Ms. Lander spent her summers in Gilmanton during her
growing-up years, so she has a keen sense of the town and its
residents. A self-described avid explorer and lover of
stories, Ms. Lander used these attributes to lead her to the
storytellers of Gilmanton, providing fodder for this literary work.
Ms. Lander, also a teacher and a blogger, will be talking to the
group and its guests about Driving Backwards, as well as about the
writing process and getting published. The public is welcomed
encouraged to attend this event.
