The Ballad Lives!
Singing the Roots of Narrative Art
Chichester Town Library
John
Perrault, poet, balladeer and former Portsmouth Poet Laureate will
help usher in Poetry Month by presenting a program of traditional
and original ballads, along with New England story songs, at the
Chichester Grange Hall, May 2nd, 2014, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Drawing from a repertoire that ranges from “Bonnie Barbara Allen,”
to the Maine woods song, “Canada-I-O,” to his own “Ballad of Louis
Wagner,” John follows the evolution of the traditional ballad from
the mountains and moors of the British Isles to the Southern
Mountains and Northern border of North America.
John Perrault is the author of Jefferson’s Dream (Hobblebush Books,
2009); Here Comes the Old Man Now (Oyster River Press, 2005); and
The Ballad of Louis Wagner (Peter Randall Publisher, 2003). His
poems have appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, Commonweal,
Poet Lore, the Salmon Poetry Anthology Dogs Singing, and elsewhere.
He is a touring artist for the New England Foundation for the Arts
and NH State Council on the Arts, and a presenter for the NH
Humanities Council.
John was a co-recipient of the Rosalie Boyle/Norma Farber Award,
2008, from the New England Poetry Club; a finalist in the 2007
Comstock Review Poetry Contest; and a past recipient of the Virginia
Prize from The Lyric. He was poet laureate of Portsmouth, New
Hampshire, 2003-2005.
John will also sing selections from Rock and Root,
now available from CD Baby:
www.cdbaby.com/cd/johnperrault. Copies of
John’s books and recordings will be available for purchase.
The public is invited to this free event, which is sponsored by the

The Canterbury Road Tree Project
Reminds Us Of Arbor Day
Chichester Heritage Commission has announced a new twist for its
Canterbury Road Tree Project. Unless you join the Arbor Day
Foundation for free trees, it can be a costly endeavor for those who
want to plant a tree every Arbor Day. What kind of tree, where to
plant, when to plant, how deep to plant, who to take care of it are
a few of the concerns. With this year’s April 25 Arbor Day quickly
approaching, perhaps this year you don’t need to plant a tree.
Through the Chichester Heritage Commission, you can now honor a
friend or celebrate the life of a loved one.
Last spring several of the 75+ year old trees were removed along
Canterbury Road due to safety issues. To help fill in the spots
left by felled maples, Commission member and project coordinator Bob
McAnney supervised the planting of four 8’ salt-resistant Fall
Fiesta sugar maples and one 9’ Green Mountain maple. The saplings
were supported and trunk protection provided for a good start. Bob
and wife Faye watered and tended the young trees throughout the
summer. The cost of all of these trees and seedlings were funded by
private donations to the Canterbury Road Tree Fund and no public
town money has been used. The planting of maple trees reflects the
Commission’s commitment to sustaining our natural landscape
heritage.
For the second year in a row, the Canterbury Road Tree Project is
underway to replace more lost maples. Trees have been ordered; and
as soon as feasible, the new trees can be planted.
Any donation is appreciated to help continue this project; upon
receipt of your donation, you will receive a certificate
acknowledging your generosity and participation.
Making a $50 - $100 donation to the Canterbury Road Tree Project
will not only help restore the natural scenic beauty of tree-lined
Canterbury Road, you may choose to receive your certificate: in
your name, In Honor of a friend/family member or In Memory of a
loved one. What a wonderful way to preserve the growing need for a
natural resource, enhance the rural community character while
honoring someone for the next 100 - 200 years!
In 2010-2011 the Chichester Heritage Commission expressed interest
in restoring Canterbury Road’s natural heritage. After
careful study, the Commission identified 27 maple trees in peril,
needing to be removed and replaced with new disease-resistant stock.
Project coordinator Bob McAnney assessed the old maples, researched
replacement trees with various nurseries and landscape companies to
choose the best options. With the help of Fayth Noyes of
Pittsfield, the signature first-planting trees were transported to
prepared holes on site. In addition, 24 NH State Forest Nursery
sugar maple seedlings were planted by Commission member Faye McAnney
at a plot on her Pumpkin Hill Farm in north Chichester. After some
more growth, they will be used for future reforestation.
Chichester Heritage Commission regularly meets 7pm, Town Library, 54
Main Street, on the third Thursday of each month; and the public is
welcome.
Archeus Chiropractic Welcomes Dr. Doughty
Dr. Joe Tepper and Archeus Chiropractic would like to thank the
Suncook Valley for two wonderfully successful years and also welcome
Dr. Chelsea (Duprey) Doughty to the practice! Dr. Doughty has
returned to her hometown of Concord since obtaining her childhood
goal of becoming a chiropractor, graduating as salutatorian from
Palmer College of Chiropractic, Port Orange, Florida. She is
excited to serve the greater capital community that has treated her
so well.
Experiencing her first adjustment just 4 days after birth, Dr.
Doughty can personally attest to the positive effects a healthy
nervous system has on growth, development and function. As such,
she has a special place in her heart for pediatric patients from
newborns on up. During her collegiate volleyball career,
chiropractic was the first intervention she sought to help with low
back pain and sport related injuries, as it is an effective,
non-invasive treatment. Her goal is to educate patients to
understand and embrace the positive health benefits afforded through
regular chiropractic care coupled with proper whole food nutrition.
While earning her doctorate, Dr. Doughty’s ambition was to study
techniques that would analyze and address the body as a whole. Dr.
Doughty has since pursued further education in and primarily applies
Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT™). SOT™ focuses on specific body
indicators to guide the doctor in choosing an evolved treatment
protocol that will address the patient’s major area(s) of
dysfunction. Necessary corrections are made with the least amount
of force needed to create change, making SOT™ a beneficial treatment
for people of all ages and conditions.
